Factory Nav

tried posting in the navigation forum, but going on two weeks now with no response so I figured I would ask here.

I'm trying to figure out if my X5 has the most recent nav software or not. The chart I find doesn't go past a certain year and my update is after the end of that chart. I'm wondering because the graphics on the map and stuff seem very outdated compared to most of the pictures I'm seeing.

My nav version is 4-1/02

Is there a more recent update?

Roadkill 12-15-2013 09:41 PM

Brandon, the latest is the V32 for the MKIV nav. Once loaded, it will read 4-1/00. Not sur what series the /02 is but it appears you could upgrade. V32 will also give you the 3D map display which updates the look of the map screen.

Brandon002 12-15-2013 09:42 PM

Thank you. Now where can I download the latest version?

Everything you need to do that is right here in this forum. There's a chart in a thread found in the ARTICLES link at the very top of the page...that will list a link to a NAVIGATION FAQ (at the very bottom of the page)...then theres a thread started by UCREW that has a list of all the versions that each nav unit can be upgraded to...and when you read and get an understanding of what software you can upgrade to...at the VERY bottom of that page is a link to download the software (which allows you to burn a disk...along with the instructions).

Here's a link that skips over having to search for it...it will take you straight to UCrew's thread & chart & link to download the software: http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all...ystem-faq.html

Brandon002 12-15-2013 10:06 PM

The chart doesn't list my software version or release date, which is why I asked.

Also, the link in the NAV how-to doesn't show V32 and the thread for V32 has a broken link to download the software. Also, the chart you linked me to goes up to V31, not V32.

Just think, in the amount of time it took you to explain to me how to look it up (which I tried already) you could have very easily just provided a link, which I found on my own already at neiloakley.com

TerminatorX5 12-15-2013 10:31 PM

brandon, you might have either an older version of the OS or a custom made version of the OS... the custom versions go past version 10.0 (which is 100, which is 00) in order to allow the upgrade process started - the nav computer will load only a different version OS than presently in the computer, and to avoid confusion, some developers called their versions 10.1, or 10.2 or whatnot... on the other hand, your could be really realy old version that is not even in the charts...

there are many threads around (some posts i posted) with a part number for the BMW Original CD disk that contains the upgrade firmware along with language packs... the disk is about $10 from a dealer, the problem is to locate a dealer that actually has a disk in their inventory...

i am too lazy to dig around for my own posts with the part number but you sure can find that...

Oh, and QS7 posted his reply not to teach you how to find something, but rather for the next fellow who is too shy to ask a question, to be able to track the steps to finding things - some posts are buried to deep in the archives and folks tend to read more recent posts, such as yours...

anyways, before overwriting your firmware (no way to recover it), check to see if it is customized in any way - i had a customized file that had russian voice files along with cyrillics that was not factory released (at the time)

Thanks a ton for the info and for clearing things up. I did a ton of searching. I'm very savvy when it comes to mechanical work, diagnostics and such. My literacy with computers ends at using programs and the internet though. When it comes to programming and all that lingo I might as well be blind and illiterate when trying to read those threads ha ha.

I'm currently downloading V32 from Neiloakley... I'll try to install it and see what happens. I guarantee mine is a very old version, probably the original from 2004. The maps are flat, bland colors, very little detail and the entire operating system as a whole is very basic.

Brandon002 12-15-2013 10:43 PM

also...

Any tips on how to proceed once I get the file downloaded? Put it in laimen's terms for me please. I know to burn it to a disc, but any setting I should be aware of before burning?

Also, is there any procedure to installing once I get the disc written? I've read tons of posts where people had their NAV system deemed useless after trying to update. I don't want that happening. So any advice you guys can give would be greatly appreiciated.

i know it needs to be burned at very slow speed (x2?). make sure you do not interrupt the power while the sw is updating, might as well run engine if you have no faith in your battery... you should be using specific type of CDs, i don't remember which ones but you should have the right ones - i read on this long long time ago, and finally, bought myself original disk, so i did not have to worry about those downloads...

Roadkill 12-15-2013 11:18 PM

Brandon, if your download doesn't work, I have the v32 disc at home. Let me know if you need it. Fairly straight forward procedure to load it just like Term stated. This video guides you through the processBMW V32 MKIII MKIV Software Update, How-To - YouTube

Brandon,

You have the latest nav software. If your graphics on the map seem outdated is because you have an old Map DVD. What year is your Map DVD?

Brandon002 12-16-2013 09:34 AM

Im not sure. I will take a look later today.

Brandon002 12-16-2013 11:10 AM

My disc is a burned copy, but says 2010 on it.

Brandon002 12-16-2013 04:26 PM

Ok guys, I'm searching for an updated map dvd for my nav.

I found a 2013 map disc, but it only says it works for X5 from 2007 to 2009, yet says it works for the 2004 5 series? wouldn't the 2004 5 series and X5 share the same navigation setup? Trying to find a disc to buy or download as i've found tons of torrent, but none show the E53 as a compatible vehicle.

The 2004 5 series was the first year of iDrive and the newer nav systems. 2007 X5 was the first year of the same newer nav. I think the newest version of the MKIV nav disc I could find was the 2011 edition. Make sure it's a "high" version.

Brandon002 12-16-2013 04:33 PM

Damn..

So where can I get a newer map disc that will work with my nav system?

Roadkill 12-16-2013 04:35 PM

I got mine from this site. Try bimmerforums. It's got a bigger classifieds section.

Brandon002 12-16-2013 04:36 PM

Anywhere online to buy a new one? What is the most curremt map disc?

Roadkill 12-16-2013 04:42 PM

Might give eBay a try or even the dealer if you want to drop the coin. I'm not sure what the latest is. When I did my research about a year ago, the 2011 version was the most updated that was available.

bcredliner 12-16-2013 05:38 PM

If 2014 maps are not out they will be soon. If you purchase from Ebay, look for discs that are not copies as some have had problems with pirated versions.

I looked for a thread where we discussed how to best burn the firmware to a disc but I couldn't find it. I don't remember for sure but I think it was 2X or maybe 4X. Seems to me the slower the better and burn it to a very good disc.

FYI- If you don't have the MKIV you might want to check out the features before investing further in the MKIII.

Brandon002 12-16-2013 05:44 PM

I have the mkiv

Brandon,

The link that Quicksilver posted (the person you were being an ass to) has step by step instructions on how to install the new nav software. So before you go off on someone who tried to help you, maybe you should take a minute and try to figure out the problem (especially when the link provided has the answer).

You need to burn to a very high quality disc and preferably at 1x. 2x max. Found this out the hard way…multiple burns until I finally slowed it down and used a HQ disc.
