01 e53 4.4 Transmission Question
 

I believe my trans has rendered its useful like. I got the trans failsafe and slipping heavily. Are the 540 or 740 interchangeable? I understand they are all the model A5S440Z,ZF5HP24???????

There is another thread here somewhere discussing transmissions. They are the same base transmission. I want to say the 4.4 does share the same transmission as the cars and the 4.6is has a modified version of the same transmission...

Your version of the 5HP24 (of which there are 27 in total) is the ‘029’ model (i.e. ZF model number 1058 000 029)

The rear end of the transmission is designed specifically to accommodate the NV125 transfer case

The only other model that would fit your E53 is the ‘034’ model for the 4.6is but this is a ‘heavier duty’ version with a larger (280mm) torque converter and an additional plate in the D-clutch pack, as well as a modified upper valve block (identified by the numbers ‘075’ stamped on it)

Any time a trans slips, try servicing it before replacing it. It's much cheaper and a lot of the time can remedy the problem.
