Transmission

Newbie X5 owner, 2001 3.0 Transmission runs through gears rapidly. Is that normal? I was told it will do that when cold to protect transmission, but seems to do it even when warm. Took it to dealer and he reprogramed it said it would take time to learn my driving habits?????

The transmission software does adapt the shifting parameters over a period of time to the driving characteristics of the operator.

Here's how you reset the adaptive driving transmission yourself, for future reference.

UCrew, is this in the articles yet? It should be, IMHO.

BTW, kudos for Kewl X5 for finding this original procedure.

Hey Monkey

How would one use this to reset the adaptive info? Do I need ot unplug something first?

See what I mean?

If the vehicle does not start, or runs in "fail-safe" mode after replacing the DME or EDK, perform
the following procedure:
1. Turn ignition ON (KL15) for 10 seconds. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CRANK / START THE
ENGINE.
2. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
3. Start the engine.

no unplugging necessary.
simply turn key from "off position" to "position 2". count to exactly 10. turn back to the "off position". count to exactly 10 seconds again. immediately start the engine when you reach 10.
it's just a computer reset for when your tranny gets replaced or your DME updated. but, you can use it when you've been driving like a granny for too long.

But that's only for the throttle adaption not for the transmission self adoption which to my knowledge can only be reset via DIS and will not be affected by the procedure mentioned above .
