Planning engine swap.
Something really basic shouldn't be to much a project, at most a weekend DIY.
Check out this video of someone who did it before me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alow...layer_embedded EDIT: I should have made myself clear, I am being sarcastic. I do not have the knowledge to do this or tools or anything. I was trying to share a swapped x5 to the community. I don't plan on actually doing this... I bet this is one hell of a ride though. |
Given that your avatar is upside down, make sure you install your new V12 the correct way. Crankshaft goes on the bottom.

unless you are getting a racing engine plus all the associated drivetrain, including a conversion to RWD only, a V12 isn't worth it. Having driven the E66 760Li vs 745Li, E38 750iL vs 740iL, and 840i vs 850i many times, the V8 is WAY better for driving around at normal speeds because it develops more power and torque at lower RPMs. The V12 feels gutless below 60mph and only comes alive at higher rpm's. Maintenance is a nightmare on the V12 also. and which V12? the M70 or M73 make less power than the N62 that's in your ride already. Which means you'd have to find an N73 or N74 if you are solely going for more power. N74 being the ideal choice for the turbo's increased torque and ridiculous power.
Although, I did ride in a twin turbo 850i, and that convinced me the engine does have potential with forced induction. If you are just doing it to make a show car or just for the heck of it, go for it. I think the N62 you have is better suited to the X5 though. |

I wonder how long the splines are on that front driveshaft?
2002 X5 245,300 miles 2004 325i 109,000 miles |
s85 v10 e53. Do it!

If mine ever goes, I'm following the advice of the guy who did the 6spd swap into the 4.8is and dropping in a LSX motor with T56 6 speed tranny... V8 hp and torque AND improved fuel efficiency with the overdrive... WIN!

Ill be selling mounts to put a LSX motor in the E53 Chassis with the 4.4liter by mid summer. Trans mount will be setup for a 4L80 though.

Sounds amazing.
