The benefit of a hydraulic tensioner is that you can replace the bearing down the road when it goes bad instead of the whole tensioner. Some E39s came with hydraulic tensioner while others came with mechanical ones.

If that is the biggest reason, then there is no reason. You can leave the tensioner and replace just the pulleys on the mechanical unit.

Thanx Guys!! youre awesome!! This is the solution to a friends noisy Z3!! ( i know different forum, different car!! but similar engine! :p: 2.5i )
so far replaced the tensioner pulleys, the water pump, the alternator, and the belts, even ran with no AC just to see, also took off the fan, and ran for a bit to see if it was the fan clutch, nothing, !! then i read this!
