What is this thing?

Any clues what this might be?

Blurry picture, any description of it?

e30cabrio 01-15-2014 11:05 AM

Something under the bumper?

ProfessorX5 01-15-2014 11:25 AM

Yeah, it seems to be some kind of box-like thing that must have held something. I'll snap a better shot in a bit.

Man you really gotta stop drinking in the mornings and focus your iphone LOL

Roadkill 01-15-2014 11:48 AM

Cut out for 2" receiver hitch. You start some strange threads dude.

StephenVA 01-15-2014 11:55 AM

What the @?!

If you indeed talking about that oval shapped punchout with the grab handle, just reach down with your fingers and pull it out.

You will see the trailer hitch mounting area, where you too can install the $2500 trailer 2" hitch if you are so inclined. See threads for that project.

Now, if you are referring to the shaps under the vehicle, that looks like a school crossing guard and stop sign to me.....:bustingup

TiAgX5 01-15-2014 12:08 PM

Mounting support for alien spaceship trailer hitch, goes with the alien twins fetus window sticker.

I think Molder and Scully were POs of your X. Have you checked for protoplasmic goo under the rear seats?

X5SND 01-15-2014 12:15 PM

Are those your heat shields hanging down on either side of the battery box?

motordavid 01-15-2014 12:21 PM

I think it's the rear tow hook attachment point, if the area of question is the oval with the horizontal 'hole'...

The OP ought to skip some potential mods and save a few bucks for a camera, or look on the web for free Photo 101 course.

After looking at my bumper I have a curved piece that extends from the bumper to forward and attaches to the subframe. Is that what you are referring to?

e30cabrio 01-15-2014 02:20 PM

Here is what I am talking about.

Do you mean the flap (#8) which can be found in the parts diagram under VEHICLE TRIM (main group) & BUMPER, REAR (sub group) & at the link to the part nbr index: :D

e30cabrio 01-15-2014 02:49 PM

It looks to me like the rounded bottom that goes into what I am showing is missing on his bumper.

X5Prof could use some photo tips from Green Dragon .... If its the two 'vertical' bars in the blurry picture, my guess, if you pull off the oval hitch mount location cover, you will see that PO Fox Mulder misinstalled a [perhaps] aftermarket trailer hitch, or part of it - perhaps an alien spaceship recovery hitch?

mrbmwx5 01-15-2014 05:22 PM

Rear bumper diffuser .. That's all.

kevinflynn 01-15-2014 05:36 PM

Monolith from 2001 space odyssey?

ProfessorX5 01-15-2014 06:00 PM

This phone is really getting on my nerves. A pox on blackberry!

Hmm, yeah I guess it is a heat shield. It was so weird looking, the paranoid side of me was thinking it might be something more interesting. ;)

e30cabrio 01-15-2014 06:02 PM

If you look at mine, you'll see yours extends longer & is not bent under like mine.

mrbmwx5 01-15-2014 06:11 PM

That looking your exhaust insulation ( heat shield) got lose.

Guess that's why it looks the way it does.

BMWX5CHI 01-15-2014 06:57 PM

Looks like your heat shields gave out. Buy some big enough washers and make sure they will overlap the holes of the heat shield so that you can reuse the factory screws and screw it back in place. They should be 10mm screws. Those heat shields tend to corrode where the screws are and they end up falling out causing noises in the undercarriage.

That sticker in the back of your X changes colors when there is a malfunction with the ships ''Docking Station''. That particular color means that your ships ''Heat Shields'' are down so you better get them fixed. :bustingup

ProfessorX5 01-15-2014 07:27 PM

LOL, shields at 20%.

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
