Airbags Deployed with no impact/collision
I have a '06 BMW X5 4.4i (one owner, 130K miles). While driving on the highway yesterday, traveling at normal highway speeds, my passenger side airbags deployed. There were no cars in my immediate vicinity, and the road (I270 North in Maryland) is in exceptionally good shape. At first I thought I may have hit some debris, but I felt absolutely nothing, When I eventually got off the highway and back to work, I took a closer look at the car - to FIND NO DAMAGE, or sign of impact whatsoever - front, sides, undercarriage - nothing. I called BMW NA and at first they were very helpful, but when it was escalated to some "resolution specialist" he outright asked me why I was calling them. When I explained what had happened. After explaining why i was calling, he said he would take it to his supervisor and they would get back to me in 3-5 business days. Needless to say this is just not acceptable, my question - has this happened with anyone else out there? This is my 4th BMW, and 15th in our family, I also own 2 BMW motorcycles and I have never experienced something like this.

Never heard of this.
I would have said because your airbags went off for no reason almost causing me to have a heart attack and kill myself/others and I want you to figure out (A) WHY and (B) pay to resolve this issue while I drive a 2014 (insert BMW of your choice here) |
Thats exactly what I said! Thank goodness, there were not a lot of cars on the road, and I have over 30 years of driving experience- or I would have had a serious problem. The anxiety is still with me - I don't scare for much (call me stupid, not brave), but this really unnerved me. I have lost all confidence in the car - which I love.

never been in an accident.

Back in 2006 when I was at dealer getting my car service and I saw the brand new x5 seating inside the show room out of blue the air bags deployed in that x5 .

From what?!...seismic activity... |
See this link. Next time you go to the service manager be prepare to show him this link.
BMW recalls 220,000 vehicles in widening airbag issue - NBC News.com or this http://www.thecarconnection.com/news...o-air-bag-flaw |
I'm sure BMW will repair at their cost, if not go to the TV stations in your area and talk with someone in their consumer affair dept.

upallnite and mrbmwx5, thanks for your helpful information - thats great.

These links are for....... 1) Takata airbags (not used in X5) that have a propellant defect, causing them to deploy incorrectly DURING an inpact. and..... 2) Seat occupant sensor mat that, when defective, keeps airbag from deploying DURING an accident while seat is occupied. These links in no way address the OPs issue, random airbag deployment. |
TiAgX5, with closer review, you are correct, my airbags deployed at 60mph with no collision at all. No one was in the passenger seat (Thankfully). Any thoughts?

Electronics malfunction ....
This another cool thing about BMW my ant 750li rolled off the clip about 60 feets deep and none of the air bag deploy at all ( 18 wheeler ran her off the road) |
So I would start digging deeper..
1. you indicate it was not in an accident...how do you know for sure? if your relying on carfax and such they are not always reliable 2. was the car bought locally as in the DMV? If so find out where serviced and get the records pulled at the local BMW dealer. If bought from Private Owner did they provide ANY records at all? 3. Did you get a PPI, what were the findings if any? 4. If not bought locally could this have been a flood car or had water infiltration? This is just paths I would start going down and my .02 Good Luckand keep us updated |
OptimusPriM5,
Thanks for the input - much appreciated - the thing is, I am one owner, I drove it off the showroom floor, and I have put all 130k miles on the clock myself. So I know the history well - absolutely no accidents or collisions. What is a PPI? |
Pre Purchase Inspection.

the computer should have a fault/trigger code stored... it will indicate that the air bag deployed because sensor XXX triggered it... whatever you do, make sure you do NOT ERASE that information from the memory until you have it printed out or otherwise saved...
There are several criteria must be met in order for the bag to deploy... under "normal" circumstances (accident is no way a "normal" circumstance) the GM evaluates whole bunch of info before deciding that the bag should open... it would be interesting to see what the computer holds... I know I-270, it is a wide open road and when not in traffic jam, the cars flow fast... and today the Feds were closed for business, so the traffic should be only regular folks doing their laundry and grocery shopping... keep us posted on the developments... |
TerminatorX5, thanks for the advice - good advice. I will get the read out at BMW dealership on Friday.

Any updates or cause identified?
|
BMW NA came back to me and the car is being inspected on Monday at the dealership. I'll post their findings as soon as I know. Thanks for the continued support

What happened with this?
|
Hi guys,
Similar situation happened to me over the weekend but the passenger airbag went off after I hit a bump pretty hard. I was wondering if you had to replace the sensors too? Or should replacing the airbags be fine? |
Sad to bump this thread. This happened today morning as my wife was getting to work.
Passenger front and rear tires blow out (possible road debris), passenger curtain and 2 rear side airbags deployed. She was only driver and was about 30 mph on 35 mph road. |
