The 325xi was the best in the snow, including deep snow. X3 comes second. X5 comes third. I never got stuck with the X5, it did pretty well, but the other two outperformed it. It all comes down to weight, given similar tires. |
Unless you have been in the south and in a real ice storm, 1-2" of snow quickly turns into thick ice. As I walked the last 5 miles home on Tuesday night (10 hours to go 10 miles in the work suv, then ditched it in the parking lot) I met a lot of great people walking with me from Ohio and New York. All fully understanding what a real ice storm is and admitted it wasn't like the north but worse. These are also the people who created dangerous driving conditions by passing in oncoming traffic lanes. They left their cars in the middle of the roads. That's what they admitted freely. From the short 5 mile walk, anything that is rear wheel drive, you were screwed. AWD cars did fine except for the Porsche Panamera. That guy parked his car back in the woods. Unfortunately, RWD cars and 2WD trucks are more popular due to the environment. BTW, X5 did fine on summer slicks and I use to live in upstate NY for many years.

Yep, because we don't get freezing rain and ice storms in Chicago.

My X does great in snow, ice and slush, with just lowly a/s tires. Brakes beautifully, dodges bad drivers like a champ.

This is ICE folks completely different beast, I don't care what you drive short of one of those behemoth trucks with studded tires w/nails sticking out you ain't going nowhere. Of course, much could be said or not about the unpreparedness of the city being that they were fully aware.. But hopefully, a lesson hard-learned. FWIW.. I drove at a moderate speed with my X3 and still was slipping and sliding away.. :)) |
So what do you think Atlanta should do? Invest in plows and salt trucks or shut the entire city down because of a little snow?

I agree with you, but it seems folks in Atlanta would rather their entire city shut down before the city uses tax dollars to buy trucks to prepare for winter.
