Air bag light on ?
02 4.4 83k
I've owned this truck for about 6 months......started up yesterday the air bag light came on and stayed on. When I first start it the light comes on than goes of for a second than stays on. I know..pull codes but is there any common problem for this. I hope it cycles off with the key eventually, can't imagine the air bag goes bad. I can imagine a $1,000 repair for a broken wire in the steering column. I've owned many 7 series and picked this X5 up for winter only....it's had many many problems in those six months I've never experienced with a BMW before. I think I spent like 5k on the car so far. Thought I was getting a good deal and I did only to spend almost $1000 a month on maintenance Problems. While I can fix most problems myself I really don't want to get underneath a car anymore. |
There's no easy fix when it comes to airbag light. You will need airbag reset tool. If the fault is there, it will light up again anyway.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Did you have the maintenance history on the X5 when you bought it? What has been done? |
My came on this winter and I blame the Polar Vortex. Hopefully I'll get into sometime in the spring. I already read the code and tried resetting the module, but the light keep coming back on with the same code. I believe I need to either reseat the connector to the airbag or replace the SRS module in the console.
But since the PORSCHE and Lotuses don't have airbags I really prefer not to have an airbag exploding in front of my face and perhaps blinding me when my glasses breaks and shards of glass penetrate my eyeballs. |
Why the hell does it come on. Nothing was ever done, no accidents.

Maybe problem with the sensor(s)
|
Month or so back our temps dropped down to 5-10 degrees and the airbag light came on during this time. Weather warmed back up, 30-40 degrees, and the light has stayed off.

Heilover...big thanks....same thing going on here in NJ. Maybe just condensation on something. I see when I start the car the light try's to go off then comes back on. It's still cold here in NJ in 20's. No warm up insight.

might be a sensor in the seat?
but i assume that would lit up along with passenger airbag off light too right? |
C'mon, we all need to be wishfull sometimes:)
I can't recall my light ever blinking though...... |
I've had a couple of cars (not BMWs) that the colder it got the more electrical gremlins would hatch, especially if there was snow or it was snowing. One would get to the point it wouldn't start. If I let it idle for 30-45 minutes in the garage after I had driven far enough to get it up to operating temperature for 20-30 minutes it would be fine for a week. I would also put my shop light inside overnight sometime to get rid of condensation. It's those times where it only gets warm enough in the car to melt the snow dragged in but not enough to dry out the carpet.

Just kidding ;) I have a heated garage and yeah I was thinking of parking it in there for a day or two. Problem is my garage is like a showroom with many 2 wheel toys inside. I do keep another classic car inside, not sure if I could bare to take her out over night :( |
Temps dropped again, light back on....

I have a friend at a body shop that can reset it but like others said it will probably come back on. I'll wait for warmer weather. This winter is kicking the crap out of all my cars. My 2014 GL has frozen windows that would not roll down, cars has about 400 miles on it. |
