01 x5-frozen doors

Is there any solution to door handles freezing?

nigwhyrito 02-06-2014 11:11 AM

im in the Chicago area and I been reading on here some good posts on how to keep everything from freezing.

1. antifreeze in the in the locking mechanism
2. wd40 in the keyhole
3. heavy duty silicone all door seals

I broke a handle\carrier last year because of not preparing my X5 like this

It was bad I had to climb in through rear hatch when all doors were frozen.

Thanks. I will try those options.

Will the antifreeze shorten out the door lock actuator?

Nope. The wiring is sealed up pretty well; doors naturally get some moisture inside them, that's why there's a plastic moisture barrier between the door cavity and the interior panel.

This is THE stuff to keep door seals from freezing doors shut.

It's a known problem, they redesigned the cables in the handle. Dealers have drivers and passengers door handles in stock and change 10-20 a month, at least my dealer. I tried the antifreeze and the hole nine yards....it works for one freeze only. Mine broke so I had the dealer fix both sides at $885 because they both were freezing and not opening, it really effects all 4 door handles. BMW North America who I called because all Mini coppers had them recalled told me "TOUGH LUCK" car is to old. I told them thank you...my next car purchase wont be a BMW. I paid thousands to fix other problems that are wear and tear...at 83k no matter what the door handles should not break when the temp gets below 32 degrees. Yugo-X5...

P.S. The gummipflege is like a Vaseline for rubber. It's used in extremely hot weather when the door gaskets get tacky and keeps the doors from sticking, 90's Honda also had this problem. It's also a good seal conditioner and general rubber lubricate.

Hahaha! Really.

Just a generic product pic I pulled off Goo Goo Image.
