ah yeah I guess x5's are okay on snow and ice. . .

Since I know you guys love to see pics of x5's getting properly used I figured I would share these. My buddy's family has a pretty awesome lakehouse that we go to in the summer all the time. This time of year when weather permits they do a huge tip up weekend where everyone brings up snomobiles, atv's dirtbikes, trucks etc. and plays around on the frozen lake. The past few years didn't have a good freeze but this year it was great 18"+ of ice means anything goes!! My buddy told me the more toys I bring the more fun we'll have so I hooked my car hauler up to the x5 with my sandrail on the back (chains on the tires) and loaded the x5 with a towable parasail and my paramotor / paragdlider. Planned on the x5 just being a transporter but once I got there and saw about 500 trucks parked on the ice like it was a walmart parking lot with thousands of sleds and atv's to boot I had to get the x5 on the lake and powder. She was a perfect tow vehicle for the parasail and I thoroughly enjoyed the looks on guys in big pickup trucks face as I blew by them in the x5 at 50mphwhile they struggled through the 8+ inches of snow (it should be a bmw commercial). I was the only one on the ice representing fine german automobiles and I am reasonably certain I am the only person to ever tow a parasail with a bimmer now! Awesome weekend and it was really unbelievable how great the x5 handled the snow and ice the thing proved again what a versatile and awesome truck it is.

Cool...btw, what kind of tires are mounted on the X5...all seasons or winter (and brand & type, too)?

mcurcio1989 02-10-2014 11:20 AM

they are winter tires but I am not sure of the brand (I'll check). The guy I bought the car from sold them with it. They handle way way better than the stock Michelin all season tires (which I think are great all season tires btw) that were on there. The traction seems to defy physics.

Funny thing is right before I put it on the ice my brother noticed that the dumb asses at the tire shop mounted them in the wrong rotation. I wonder what they would be like going the right way! I'm gonna have to take it over there.

Very cool, esp the parasailing part!
Need to try that as a passenger, with a real pilot flying it, lol!
Even our older Xs with non-XDrive do very well in winter, with dedicated winter tires.
Cool post and pics...

Wow...you'd think that tire jockeys would notice something like that...I guess it pays to keep a watchful eye...as Pres Reagan said...trust, but verify. :)

And thanks for the update...with a great testimonial like you gave...it's good to know what was behind the great traction, steering, & braking. It helps others when making a decision.

I swear by my Michelin X-Ice xi2s...I had to force them to break because I was beginning to wonder if my DSC even worked because I hadn't seen it illuminate this entire winter (Polar Vortex and all). After the parking lot emptied last week...I found a nice slick patch (ice below some packed snow)...I did a couple of stomps on the accelerator and eventually got the traction control light to flash briefly. But with the xDrive and dedicted winter tires...it really is hard to get her to break loose.

The directionality is for water evacuation in the rain as well as noise suppression. Shouldn't make a difference in snow. Possibly could make a difference on ice...

It looks like lots of fun but I have frostbite from just looking at the pictures.

It was nice and warm in the x5 :) I hate cold weather mostly just because usually nothing to do but if you bundle up and are actually doing something outside it isn't bad at all.
