Slight knocking noise from Engine 4.4

I just noticed on my 02 4.4 I have a slight knocking noise when I bend down by the pass front wheel like if you where cleaning the wheel. It's coming from the engine but I don't know if it's high on the engine or low. It has to be quit to hear.

If your over the engine with the hood up you don't hear it. If your on the drivers side wheel you don't hear it.

It does sound like a bad rod bearing but it also could be a sound coming from the flywheel or crank pully.

If anyone has the time with a 4.4 can you go to your pass front wheel while its idling and squat down and see if you hear a slight knock noise.

I hope to hell I don't have a bearing going bad with only 83k.

I don't hear anything down near the RF wheel on my M62 (over 175K miles).

What is the oil/filter change history of your X?

Thanks for the quick response......damn this does not look good.

I bought the car from a friend who put no miles on it...his brother bought it when new and was always serviced by the dealer ( I now this doesn't mean anything anymore) ....inside the valve cover looks new. I have lubo molly...not sure of the weight but whatever the book calls for and a mann-bosch or OEM type aftermarket filter.

Sounds like it's time to probe around with a mechanics stethoscope to locate the knock.

I have one......

I have to wait until it's not 15 degrees out and it's not snowing. That's a good idea and I'll do it this weekend.

Does anyone who might redline the X while the oil is cold have access to the X key?

Nope......

mine makes a slight ticking noise on the passenger side
I thought it was an exhaust leak
but it is probably some valve or lifter, been that way for the last 50,000kms

might even be something on the accessory/belt drive

A rod knocking will be more evident when the engine is cold and more evident when you rev engine and it is coming back to idle with no load on it, The knock will slow down as the RPMS decrease. A rod knock has a very distinct sound that generates an --Oh S$%T that can't be good.

Good lubrication is the key to rod longevity and you aren't skimping there.

I think the bottom end of a 4.4 engine falls in the bulletproof or near bulletproof category, not considering extremes like running it with no oil or water in the oil. I suspect if anything is wrong it is something other than a rod.

thanks for everyone's replies...and Gurjit for listening to your car for me.

I'll put my scope on it this weekend.

This is the oil I'm using
