Auto clutch slip?
Hello, got a 2003 X5 3.0i auto
Ive noticed if the car isn't driven for few days, that when you get in it to drive away, engage drive, the car barely moves forward even though the revs go high (3000 to 4000 rpm) Then it feels like it kicks properly in to gear and is absolutely fine after this with no clutch slip whatsoever. Has anyone experienced this or know whats going on? Thankyou |
Update, just spoke to a auto transmission specialist, he says sounds low on gearbox oil! Does that sound right??
|
Yep, sounds fluid related. I had this problem and changed the transmission fluid and filter. It greatly improved the situation, but didn't eliminate the slip completely. Just wait a few seconds for it to get into gear before you try to go anywhere

check tranny fluid right away it will act like that. theres a plug on the side of tranny where you check and fill, when you fill tranny fill until it runs out of that hole put plug back in, then start x5 let it warm up a bit then check fluid again and top off fluid till it runs out the hole ,then your good to go. alot of auto manufactures don`t use tranny dipsticks anymore due to people over filling the tranny with fluid .

:iagree: First thing I would check is fluid level.
Depending on how long before your X starts to move and if you are located in one of the cold weather Sussexs, it could be normal. If there is a next time it happens, try going from drive to reverse and back and see if it begins to move. |

It sounds normal to me, especially if it only happens when it is very cold and has been sitting in the cold overnight.

yeah thats why i wasnt to wooried about it , the tranny was just rebuilt about 6000km ago , buy the dealer i got it from in the june , the tranny shifts nice and smooth , other than in extreme cold just a delay but no clunking or anything like that .i feel confident in the tranny, actually i have alot of confidents in the x5.

Fluid wasn't too thick, but was probably low since ATF contracts when it is cold out there not like Milk and Water which expands when it is cold outside. Note that the ATF has to be a certain temperature when you check it. If you drive it to a shop or dealer, the ATF will be too HOT and will give you a false reading |
"EDITS"
Step 1 Check the ATF Level (like everyone suggested) and scan (esp EGS/TCU, DME/ECU, VTG/Transfer case for codes) - to make sure no slipping + right voltage ~14v Also if you can find out your Prog ECU/TCU Level and if there is a recommended update for your case (research/understand very carefully) Step 2 Read the link below (very technical though, to sum in up its either the warm-up cycle or the said dispute against bmw or the fluid level or other things) http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...on-d-mode.html |
