Runs rough after start up (not related to the cold temp)

Hello X Fans,
I recently bought a 2004 all wheel drive X5 with the 4.4L N62 engine. It definitely needs some TLC but then that's why they sold it to me. Anyway, most of the issue are cosmetic (like window and door handle type issues). I do have one engine issue that I am hoping to get some input on from you guys.

Here is the problem. I start the engine and it starts, but runs rough for like 15-30 seconds then something happens and I get a P0021 and P0024 code (codes are intake cam over advanced and exhaust cam over advanced) and then it starts running beautiful. I can drive it and it drives great and all is good, until I turn it off and it starts all over again. Doesn't matter if the engine is hot or not and it seems to happen every time I start it. Not getting any other codes. It seems like the timing is off and I have some misses till the codes come on and then it smooth's out. I am thinking it could be the Vanos solenoids but it seems unlikely that they both would have a problem at the same time. Definitely seems like I am not getting the oil to the Vanos to adjust timing at start up. Is there anything that could starve both intake and exhaust solenoids? :dunno:

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi,

This sounds like a common problem for many of us (u are not alone ...) and this problem has been discussed many time here where you can find many threads...http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ke-bronco.html

I had the same symptoms on mine for a year (think that we have the same engine)...problem came more frequently during winter seasons with engine light flashing etc...

I had some leaks on my driveway, i have cleaned all the engine to see where this came from. Valve cover gasket..... both bank in my case my mechanics explain to me that oil were mixed into the plug creating kind of a ground at start.

I have changed the valve cover gasket and new bosh plugs...no more misfire so far. I'm just sharing my experience can be a lot of things...when i'm in the dark i go to the stealer and get there estimates and bring it to my INDY mechanics.

Welcome to the forum !

Yep, I have been reading a lot and you are right many people are having the same problem. Funny they all seem to have a different fix for it. The X must just give the same symptoms for a lot of different issues.

I do have a couple oil leaks and I am guessing the biggest leak is the valve cover gaskets. I am also looking to check and/or replace the non return valves on both sides while I am in there. Also, checked the spark plugs last night and from the look of it I am suspecting they have never been changed. (200k miles) Lastly, the connectors for the valvetronics were dirty so I will clean those.

If I have any luck I will repost my findings.

Cool, here is a thread with a great video for the valve cover gasket
Good luck...
