Idler/ "Deflection pulley" broke off yesterday

So.. left my original post at the bottom but documenting this in case anyone on here runs into the same issue. Looks like the bearings seized up.

Found the belt and pulley i needed on advance auto's website. Store pickup available too so no wait for shipping, picking it up today. Cost was around 50 with belt and pulley + 20 off coupon code. $30 fix.

________
Just started my car about to go to gym, its cold here but it is garage kept....

Fired it up remote start came out about 30 sec later...

What is this noise and smelled weird in engine bay too.... I shut it off after this vid..

Noise X5 - YouTube

I looked up a quick vid n62 chain noise which i guess is what it sounds like and comments said tensioner and some said they replaced a/c and fixed...

For lack of better words am i fked or not.

Started it up again... This time sounds like crap and squeeling... Turn off, checked belt, has tension...

One of the plastic pulley things is sheared off chilling by my PS hose that runs straight down, not sure which one it is but it looks like the most bottom one on drivers side... Belt is pushed against it still but at 60 degree angle.

And.... pics i think its the tensioner...

Look straight down along the ps steering hose... dont think this belongs there

Even though there's not much fun in having to replace your belt tensioner, it still has got to be a huge relief that it was not the dreaded chain guides.

Aye!!! Looks like the bearing seized... Didn't I just see a post with you dumping in some wrench time on maintenance work replacing some things including tensioner or am I just imagining it?

4.8isX5 03-04-2014 09:55 AM

No i didnt. And yep... when i took off the fan and stuff to get better access you could see a few bearing balls on the plastic cover below...

luckily advance auto around me has the parts.... 30$ for a new belt and wheel with 20$ coupon.. Picking up today.. easy fix

Was it the same noise like mine?

4.8isX5 03-04-2014 11:25 AM

DPG possibly. Especially with this cold weather we getting, even though its garage kept its not heated but im guessing if it was 50 degrees yesterday this would have ran a bit longer.

Glad to hear you fixed it. I don't trust belt tensioners or pulleys (bearings) after about 6 years or so, belts too for that matter.

When I bought my X 2 years ago I did all tensioners, pulleys and belts as you're just running on borrowed time with that sort of stuff. Turned out my indy showed me my fan clutch which was about 100 miles from seizing up as well, and we did it then too. Totally messed up it was.

Glad you figured it out man.

My wife had a similar issue about a year ago with her X5 with the M54. She was driving home from work, and suddenly she heard a "thump", lost power steering, got the charging light, and had to pull over in a parking lot. She called me, freaking out, thinking that her car was done for. I showed up, thinking it had thrown a belt, and found that the idler bearings had seized up and thrown the belt. Same deal, $40 later, her car was back on the road that evening.

Good on ya for fixing it, and thankfully that busted pulley didn't destroy something else on its way out of there.
