2000 X5 IGNITION KEY
Had to order a new key for X5 the transmitter failed and the battery replacement didn't work... uggg $$$ . After convincing the dealer that I really owned the car the key is on order.. My question is once it arrives does the car have to go to dealer to be programmed ??:dunno:

Not for the EWS part of the key but for the comfort part of the key, the key will need to be program, not unless you know how to program the key.
Comfort part of the key is the unlock/lock/tail gate unlock/and alarm on/off. |
Based from my experience :
Old the key is not functioning right? And there is no way to re- sync the old key to the vehicle? If both are true , then new key + key coding + vehicle sync Otherwise old key can be used to initialize the sync with the new keys |
A BMW remote key contains 3 features...EWS, FZV, & DWA. EWS data comes from BMW who already has the info and they send the new key already cut with the correct EWS transponder inside of it. The FZV/DWA (central locking/anti-theft alarm sire system) features of the remote key must be programmed after receiving the key.
As posted multiple times a month...instructions on how to program the remote keys to lock/unlock & arm/disarm (FZV/DWA) the vehicle are below. Instructions must be followed to the T...don't fudge, skip, overlook, or combine any of the steps...if so, programming will probably fail. The new remote key (or regular key) will come from BMW already cut for the lock cylinders based on your car's VIN...as well as the EWS transponder (the immobilizing feature of the remote key & regular key) comes from the factory already with your car's ISN (individual serial number) assigned to the key. This was all taken care of when the car rolled off the assembly line. There were 10 keys (ISNs) programmed into your EWS control module...the original owner received 4 of them...which leaves the availability of 6 spares that BMW already has in preparation for replacement keys. (see info below) Tips:
