It's an 05 with 112k miles on it, picked it for 10k. After I bought it I found out why it was priced so low, the panoramic sunroof failed but I found a fix for it. I'm getting ready to send the MID off to fix the pixel issue. Other than that I love it.

Hope you still love it by the end of the year, the road ahead may be rough and unpleasant.:(

Why so much doom and gloom? I agree that E53 X5 isn’t the most reliable but not bad if you’re willing to wrench a little. I'm still loving my X5!

OP, congrats on your first BMW. Sweet color!

I'm a BMW, Harley and Honda motorcycle tech so wrenching doesn't bother me. I plan on being preemptive with maintaining it.

:iagree:
If all someone has to say to the first time owner is to scare them of their newly acquired SAV, that's not cool. Their experience might not be the same as yours. I own various E53s since 2005 and I'm quite satisfied with them.

Just like any used car you purchase, these will require preventative and timely maintenance in the first few years, just don't go cheap on parts, find a good indy who knows what he is doing or if you feel comfortable than DIY.

Honestly its really not as bad as some would have you feel. Sure if you paid dirt cheap for your E53 and its high in miles and age I would expect to put some money into the car maintenance wise. But after 2+ years of ownership it's honestly just like owning any used car out of warranty, I fix things if they break and I also do some things preventatively, any and all money put in is way cheaper than the car payment on an LCI E70 diesel that's for sure.
