Time to say goodbye to the 4.8is

The 4.8is is one of the badest vehicles on the road. It's exhaust note is like music, it will blow off most cars on the road and even give an e46 M3 a run for it's money(ask me how I know). it's also roomy, comfortable, luxurious and can tow 6000lbs. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most expensive vehicles to maintain once it gets over 100k

My wife and I are heartbroken. We feel like we're taking our favorite dog to the pound. We've put about 24k in repairs in the two years that we've owned it and that's with me doing most of the work.15k of those repairs were warranty: the trans & diff replacement as well as the alternator bracket gasket oil leak which are all high cost repairs. Everything else we did a our selves: air suspension nightmare, Suspension components, brakes, electrical gremlins, trunk lid actuator, mirrors, etc,etc
Now that we have 7 month old twin boys, they are our new money pit  (they are the reason I haven't been on here in so long)

I'd like to thank all of you on this site for providing a great forum full of friendly, enthusiastic people. I haven't done anything to the X5 without looking here first.
We'll see some of you at Bimmerfest East...one of the best times I've had at any meet and one the most bad ass representations of the mighty E53. I didn't get much time to hang out last year because Kristen had her 135 in the show and I had my e46 with another forum.
Here's the listing my wife put on Craig's list. we'll probably just trade it in later this week at Kristen's dealership. 2005 BMW X5 4.8is LeMans Blue 355HP V8 AWD
We have an OEM load space divider a complete OEM cargo liner and LED angel eye bulbs that we'll probably sell separate.

Good luck with your X5s... may they serve you well for years to come!

Rob, see you at the Bimmerfest.

Good luck with the sale... Drop a few pictures in the thread...

tmv 03-13-2014 08:56 AM

GLWS. If you trade it in, what's next?
The "iS" is still one of the best SUV on the road today. If $15k was warranty works then you didn't put $24k into it. Some new owners might find the figure scary.

Ricky Bobby 03-13-2014 09:11 AM

I'd say considering the cost of the trucks when new, if 15k of 24k was covered under warranty and you got the major things out of the way, I'd say you were well caught up and probably the next owner should have mostly trouble free years ahead.

Good luck man we are gonna miss you on here, great price your X is beautiful.

All the LeMans are getting sold, first TwinsPoppa, then relentless1 in South Jersey, and now sockethead in South Jersey.

At least you knew when it was time to pull the plug instead of tossing good money after bad money.

lhordmclain 03-13-2014 10:29 AM

:iagree:

Case to case basis for different owners

I wish the OP best of luck in finding a new vehicle,
And Please post in the near future the specs

Still $24k of work was done to it no matter who paid for it. I'm not bashing or trying to scare people away, just telling our experience. We love our X5. Financially, it's time to let it go... from the heart, we'd keep it forever.

What's next? My wife moved from BMW to parts manager at Acura (same parent company owns the whole complex of 10 dealerships) They have a '08 MDX, completely optioned out and half the mileage for dealer cost so we'll see how that works out.... it certainly aint no X5.
We still have three other BMWs.... My wife has a heavily modified 135, I have an e46 ZHP and we have an F30 X drive for a daily driver. The 135 and e46 stay in storage over the winter and we used the X5 for shitty weather and road trips with the trailer out to Ohio with the twins and dogs. It was our favorite so we used it a lot.

A guy saw it on Craig's list and he's buying it tomorrow. He's really excited. So, yea we feel pretty good about selling it in it's present condition with all the work that's been done to it. We hate to sell anything that sucks.
He understands that they need a lot of TLC. I told him he needs to join this site so maybe you'll see our LeMans blue back on here again soon. Who knows? I may be on here now and then to give my two cents. I know a hell of a lot about the E53 now lol

So we're at the bank exchanging money and my wife is showing him how the switch for the suspension works and it goes into self leveling suspension inactive... WTF? This thing will not go quietly!
I think the module is bad again because the TPMS light is on too. Luckily we had the module replaced and coded by Kristen's BMW dealership so it will be covered under warranty but Jesus! The guy took it anyway but we had to sign that we would fix it.
Man, I hate to say it but I just want this thing to go away now :(

They are vindictive little f*ckers. The night before my X5's new owner picked her up, the tail light went out and one of the parking sensors stopped working. The tail light bulb contact just needed to be bent in more, and the parking sensor needed to have some corrosion removed, but I had my bumper off in my driveway at 9pm in the rain. Not fun. I don't think I even looked back when the new owner drove away, lol.

For what it's worth, I learned which parking sensor was bad by listening to which one wasn't clicking when activated, something I learned here on the forum. This really is a great community with a wealth of knowledge, so anyone buying an X5 certainly doesn't need to worry about being on their own with these issues.

Best of luck sockethead!

Is your compressor new or did you buy a repair kit for it? There's a chance the seal could be wornt out on the piston throwing the error. Wonder what the error is in the module

Yea the compressor is new as well as all 4 air bags. after that it worked for like a day before the module went. We drove it like that for a year until we got sick of looking at it. I believe it was you, my friend, that told us if the TPMS light is on too that the module is bad and sure enough it was at that time.

I briefly had a chance to hook up the GT1 to it before the owner took it. It said that the left front and rear leveling sensors were bad.... I don't believe it because we got that last time too and swapping the sensors made no difference. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time to run though the diagnostic routine to clear the error as everyone had to get back to their jobs...

TwinsPoppa 03-14-2014 02:41 PM

Rob,

Congrats on the twins! They're very close to the age that was very fun for me!

Sorry to hear about selling the X. I know how you feel and I also know how well you took care of that beast.

Remember this from Bimmerfest 2012? You and Kristen.

See you at Bimmerfest later this year!

I will have to say in my case I pretty much didn't have a choice. Keep the X5 or keep the '68 mustang. Divorce sucks! LOL

We put the wheels from Kristen's car onto my black e46 and it looks sick. She put VMR v701s on hers and it looks great!

Here's a pic of the twins with fohawks lol. They are 7 months old now... you can understand what we've been going though, eh?

50/50 custody. ;)

AWESOME MAN! the dad's always get the short end of the stick lol good for you!

sockethead 03-25-2014 12:41 PM

Just updating the status of the self level inactive message... As we thought, the module was bad again. That lasted less than a year. Since it was installed by the dealer, the replacement and coding was covered 100%.

So once again, if your TPMS light is on along with the inactive message, your module is bad

bcredliner 03-25-2014 12:54 PM

Good luck!

Twins are very cute!
