The Big Thaw

This winter (Chicago area) has been absolutely brutal.

Now that the weather is warming up a tad..

Squeaky driver's side rear suspension
Squeaky brakes (even though they only have 3000 miles on them)
Squeaky front wheel bearings
Squeaky belts (or pulleys, haven't narrowed it down yet)
Need front thrust arm bushings
Guibos need replacing

Still need to replace valve cover, timing cover and alternator bracket gaskets as well.

I don't know whether to fix it at this point or light a match. Calgon take me away. This has to be one of the worst winters I've ever experienced in my lifetime, at least that I can remember.

On a positive note, no more cold start misfires with the temp getting up in the 50's multiple times this week.

my 850i was struck down by the wizard of winter too.
its electronics would not work in the cold and all 4 hood/trunk shocks failed and had to be replaced. Its odd what the freezing cold endured for a while can do to machines/equipment.
My X5 came out rather unscathed except for CCV's needed replacing and cold start issue 2-3 times...
I wish we'd move to a warmer climate soon!!! I don't ever want to have to own winter and summer wheels/tires if I can justify it.

I couldn't believe it, car was perfect up until a day or two ago. As soon as it warmed up all these noises surfaced. I guess mine just loves winter.

Guys, what were your cold start issues?

Clockwork 03-13-2014 04:56 PM

Engine would shake extremely on start up and yellow CEL would stay on for a while.

Likewise with mine this winter. 2-3 times shaking like mad! It's been down for the last two weeks for VC and front timing cover gaskets.....oh and the valley pan and all the hoses of course!

Extremely rough idle, flashing SES light etc...

I replaced the CCV's and that didn't solve it. I'm thinking either a vacuum leak from the valve covers or intermediate lever problems (valvetronic). I can't wait for 60 plus degree weather so I can actually start tackling some of this stuff little by little.

Do you have the machine press for the castor bushes?

Brandon002 03-13-2014 05:38 PM

I don't, but my uncle owns a shop near by so I'll press them in there.

Glad to hear you have the resources.... Good luck man!

Same here... Waiting for the weather to be stable... Not mechanical but Detailing! ( I'm not skilled to use a rotary so I bought a flex xc 3401 VRG )
