X5 - Back in action!!

Feeling very accomplished! After 2 weeks of working-on and staring-at my X - I completed the valve cover gaskets, front timing cover gaskets and valley pan, and cooling hose replacement.

Took it for a 25 mile drive around town yesterday and all seems well!!

On first start I did get some rough running a little surfing and misfires. Not sure if that's maybe due to air in the fuel injection system? Seems reasonable to me

All in all it was relatively drama-free. I did have an issue with the drivers side valve cover initially - I didn't have it seated down all the way and it was leaking oil with gusto. The middle plastic clip on the cover was hanging up a little

Serious thanks to this forum for the guidance and occasional emotional support!

On another note - my Chinese BMW Scanner 1.4 should arrive today. That should be a fun tool!!

Congrats! I am sure it feels great to have accomplished all that work correctly. Good job.

Congrats! Mine is going through the same treatment now. She has 180,000km on it and I'm hoping the refresh will get me another 200,000km out of her :). I have my E36 328 at 340,000km, in awesome shape, rides like its on rails and purrs like a kitten (screams like a banshie on the track though…..).

I also agree with your kudos to the forum. My wife wanted me to look at a Nissan Pathfinder. What kind of following does it have compared to the group and resources here? I really like BMWs, despite their quirkiness, so if I had to pick a vehicle to turn a wrench on, I'd rather an X5 than a Pathfinder. I hope I can contribute to the forum over the coming years too.

Cheers.

Thanks. All in all I think I spent somewhere around $600 in parts. Good deals can be had if you shop-around a little. I noticed pricing varying by as much as 40% on most items.

I can't imagine how much labor $$$$$ I saved. It's a fairly work intensive job for sure.

Really glad it's done now - before I move into something else
Hopefully a little more simple.

It does need a new boot/axle assembly on the front passengers side.

Sweet! I elected to do the "cold climate" CCV upgrade on the one valve cover. I turned and coughed on the new parts.

Those are the insulated-type tubes right? The OG ones are non-insulated?

I noticed mine had the insulated type installed. Perhaps this was done by the PO. My car was manufactured in 3/2005

Here is a thread highlighting some of the updates. M versus N engines have different solutions.

I attached the document I used for the part numbers for my 2004. Found it on this forum somewhere. Involves a new valve cover with the CCV external, not built in.

Cheers.
