New 4.4i Owner
3 Attachment(s)
Good Evening,
Wanted to introduce myself as a proud owner of a 2004 X5 4.4i. I really wanted to get a 4.8is but this one came up at to good a price so in the meantime I am going to drive this until I find one and give it to my younger sister. Don't plan on modding it to heavily plans for now but include LED Angel Eye upgrade, wiring in the AUX cable, maybe painting the grills black, and possibly the BSW subwoofer system. I do have a couple questions regarding the vehicle however. I need a passenger side mirror and decoded my VIN and saw I have the S430A Interior/outside mirror with auto dip option. I looked up on real oem and saw the only options for the passenger side are a wide and a convex option, link is below. My mirror does not look convex and I'm wondering if part #51168247774 is the right part. Also if anyone has any feedback regarding LED Angel Eyes, the AUX Wiring, or the BSW Subwoofer system it would be greatly appreciated. Onto some info about it, its Sterling Gray on Black Leather with fine wood trim. It has 140K on the clock but I knew the previous owner and it has been meticulously maintained. He's spent thousands of dollars in maintenance on it and it definitely shows. I drove the vehicle from Atlanta to South Carolina then to New York and it did not skip a beat. Plenty of power, very comfortable at speed, and I averaged 18.2 mpg. Pictures are below, don't have any of the interior but I'll get some this weekend. Thanks guys. |

I'm glad you find us here too ;) Is that a friend of yours in the truck? |
Hello and welcome to the X5 forum
Most of your questions have been asked before and are posted in the Articles section at the top of the site splash page. Vin info, glass replacement for side mirrors, etc, VIN decoding: BMWVin.com |
Nice X...how many miles?
|
FYI the guy in the pickup truck beside the X in the first picture is flipping the bird LOL

And yea I realized the bird after I took the picture lol Thoughts on going with black kidney grills and hood grills? Also my key remote is not working, I have tried reprogramming it several times to no avail. I only have on e key so I will probably end up buying another one for the sake of having a spare but are there any other fuses/areas I should check for possible reasons why it isn't working? |

Is the Central Locking work? Does it lock/unlock with the door cylinder? If so, the battery might be dead. I replaced the one in my old E39 and other local E39 owners too.
FYI: it cost $185 at the dealer. |
Well I drove from South Carolina to New York and still didn't have any luck. It locks with the central locking button inside as well as the door cylinder. I heard that if one of the locking mechanisms was sticking or not working properly it could cause the key to not program properly.
|
Before replacing the battery, check to see if the gas door locked when everything locked. If not, you need a new actuator.
Let me know if you need help with the key battery. |
Will do. It'll probably be this weekend but I will check and report back. I might end up getting a new key since I only have one key and would feel a lot more comfortable knowing I have a spare.

That's a great looking color! With the miles that are on it you're in the sweet spot (150-200) where the timing chain guides will fail and need to be replaced. Do a search and you will find several threads on the subject, it's been happening a lot lately as us V8 owners cars get older. Depending on where you take it the cost can run anywhere from $2000-$5000 dollars, or you can do it yourself, drive safe and enjoy.

Welcome ! 4 Chrome tips would fit nicely with that grey :D
|
Thanks man I really like the color as well. I'll have to check the records and see if the previous owner had the guides replaced when he owned it. And I thought about doing chrome tips but I haven't decided yet.

Please would be good to add in your signature your car pedigree i.e model, year, miles, equipement etc....that way all other members will be able to help you
|
Just updated it. And it definitely isn't bad looking, I'm just not sure if I want to black the grills out and have no chrome or if I want to leave it

Many 540i E39 (same M62TU engine) owners on bimmerforums still have the original guide on theirs with over 200k miles. Your statement makes it seem like it would definitely failed in that mileage range, which is not true. Moreover, the OP has N62 in his, not the M62TU as in yours. Please top scaring new owner. He didn't ask for any owner experience. |
I've heard of some horror stories of deteriorating on higher mileage on M62s. My friend had a 97 540i with the M62B44 that needed timing chain guides after about 160,000 miles. His was very unusual because the inside of his motor was very clean and looked to be well maintained. The only other times I've heard of it being a real issue is when the motors are abused and not maintained properly. We had a 740il with the same engine and never experienced any guide problems. Given my X5 has the N62B44 I really can't comment on prone it is to guide failure. We had a 745i and now a 645ci with the same motor but they were not at that high a mileage.

Congrats!!

^Thanks man, really pleased with my purchase. This is the first BMW "SAV" I've owned and I have to say that I really like it. I've only really driven their cars occasionally driving a friends X5 here and there but never enough to really get a good feel for it. It really is like driving one of their cars albeit a bit higher. Steering is still tight an responsive, the power is there when you need it, and it does all that while remaining extremely comfortable.
