Replacing factory radio NON-NAV

Hey all,

Been scouring this site for info about replacement radios for my 2002 X5 3.0 manual. I've got no issue with the quality of the sound, its no Bose system like I had in my G37 but it does the job. What I DO want is easier iPod access (the factory unit with my iPod in the glove box SUCKS) and mp3 functionality. I do NOT have the double din navigation unit. Is it a total and complete pain in the balls to replace these things? I keep reading about DSP but I'm not sure if my vehicle has it or not. I've posted on here before and my vehicle is pretty strange. No navigation unit but it came with a BMW optioned rear entertainment package with the DVD player in a case on the side of the trunk (which I still haven't gotten to the bottom of).

Thanks.

Have you confirmed that it came with the entertainment system by using the VIN number to pull up the build sheet?

No I'm not sure about how to do that. But I don't believe it interacts with the stereo system at all. Controls are via remote and on the unit itself and sound is through headphones. Not sure if any sound comes through the speakers since it was DOA when I got the X5 but I doubt it.

EDIT: Google is my friend. Rear DVD was definitely installed after factory, probably a dealer option/

I would add bluetooth.

Does the plug in the glovebox work via AUX on your radio?

daudet 03-31-2014 01:53 PM

Yeah, and it's a total pain in the ass to use. Have to hook up the ipod after the vehicle is in the on position, then go into the MID and utilize it from there.

The following thread may should help: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...streaming.html

If you have to ask or question if you have it...99.9% probability that you don't have it. Why? You'd have to have a serious case of not being able to focus...as well as having horrible eyesight...because you'd be looking at a button that says DSP on your MID every time you look at it....and NOT see it. :D

The MID can come in 2 forms HIGH & LOW and either be optioned with or without DSP. The HIGH MID has the BC button which extends some OBC features like 1CONSUM2/ARRIVAL/DIST/SPEED/LIMIT...and if the vehicle has DSP...those letters are prominently printed on the top right button on the MID next to the word AUDIO.

Haha yep, that was the 1st thing I noticed when I got into it after work today, no DSP button like the other ones have in the pics I've seen. It's funny how you can drive something every day and look at it every day and then not know what the hell is on there. So yeah, basically what I want to do is take out the BMW business CD and throw in a single DIN basic Pioneer unit into that slot. I know I'll need the plastic housing piece but as far as the electronics go I'm not sure if it's plug and play or not. I just really want to have easier access to the iPod and a legit AUX input. I don't really care about bluetooth TBH.
