DSC ABS Brake lights fixed...
Trifecta of DSC-ABS-BRAKE lights came on last week along with no speedometer. Was worried that it might be the ABS/DSC module. Since the speedometer gauge wasn't working, I figured I would just order the rear speed sensor from the dealership. Because I have a 2001 model year, they didn't have it in stock. I picked it up today after they called me to say it arrived. Got home, raised up the rear driver's side wheel, removed the old crusty sensor, cleaned out the hole that it fits into and then installed the new sensor, put the wheel back on and lowered the vehicle.
I then started the vehicle and the lights were still on. I then figured I need to drive it a little to get wheels rotating so that the sensor can sense the wheel speed. Once I drove it down the street about 500 feet, the lights went out and the speedo works again. Hopefully my problem is fixed because the inspection is due soon and I don't need any lights showing up on my dashboard. As a side note: my check engine light did NOT come on nor did a Trans Fail Safe message appear. Another side note: I used the factory jack to raise my left rear and about 3 minutes into that, the self-leveling kicked in and the vehicle started moving. It stopped but luckily did not fall off the jack. I then quickly removed the self-leveling fuses from the rear compartment so that the vehicle wouldn't move again. I used my hydraulic jack to set it back correctly so that I could replace the sensor. Pretty scary when it moved; that shouldn't happen!!! 2001 BMW X5 4.4i 171,000 miles |
Thanks for posting your problem and a solution.

how much was your sensor from the dealer?

About $146. I could have ordered it online from other aftermarket places for cheaper pricing but I just wanted to be sure about the part.
