Audio! Help!
I jump started my 01 x5 4.4i and all of a sudden my speakers have a loud noise like if it was on an unknown radio channel, I have a Lear amp hifi dsp! Did I blow the amp? Or speakers? Only the front tweeters work. There is no water damage in trunk at all, and there is no other problem with the vehicle the jump start ONLY affected the speakers so I'm not sure if it's the amp or the speakers.
|
something definitely fried inside the amp... the amp is designed so it takes basically two input channels (left and right) and transfers them into 12 outputs... you would need to narrow down to specific speaker(s) that stopped working... the troubleshooting might be rather extensive - you would need to tear apart the left side pocket area in the trunk, to gain access to the amp... and then use the amp pinout to troubleshoot each channel - use your third party speaker to connect to the amp and see if the sound is distorted, and then use a sound signal to send down the wires to the car's speakers to see if the speakers can reproduce the sound...
based on your description that the multiple speakers are malfunctioning, i would suspect that the problem at common point, which is the amp... what is the exact date of manufacture of your car? |

And it's all the speakers including subwoofers EXCEPT dash tweeters. I tore the trunk apart already anyways and I have the amp in hand wasn't that hard to remove with proper tools! But I don't have a third party speaker or any of that. So it's probably the amp? Should I just pay to get it repaired? |
i hate throwing parts or money at a problem... do you know how to read WDS diagrams? based on your date, this pinout seems to be the one for your situation

This is how I would proceed with the amp testing. Maybe there other, simpler methods I don't know about. Try replacing the amp, maybe it will take care of the problem
Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk |
As side note I highly doubt speakers you can blow from jumping a car something like a amplifier or head unit finals are more subject to spikes in voltage/amps.

those DSP amps aren't cheap either...do you have a good salvage yard or 10 nearby to search for the proper DSP amp. A 5-series amps will work, but you have to get them recoded by someone with a DIS as the adjustments are all wrong for the X5 if the amp came from a 5-series (E39 M5's all had DSP).
If it is toast, you might want to just go aftermarket, but that's not cheap either...nor is it simple with DSP vehicles <sigh> |

Carlos, from your other thread we got confused if you are using aftermarket HU and/or amp.
You described your HU having a CD/DVD behind the screen which X5 never came with. Are you sure you have the stock sound system? |
TerminatorX5, the DSP diagram you've posted is spot on with the connectors that came with the DSP amp I purchased; the amp is the correct version for my production date.
But riddle me this: the factory Hi-Fi system I'm working to replace, the amp harness has six extra wires. I thought perhaps they are for the telephone but I see the DSP connector is accounting for the phone option. I just have business CD above my MID and no NAV. Any suggestions on what those extra wires would be there for? You'd think the DSP amp would require six extra not the other way around. |
Just saw this on the phone. I will look closer once on computer

I had a similar situation with my radio unit after a jump start. The whole right side was dead. I sent the unit (I think bm53) to a fellow in the UK named Baris who worked his magic for a lot less than any replacement I could find, even with int'l shipping. Supposedly upgrades the faulty parts in the process. I know he's been referenced here a few times. Company is called Carphonics. All communications were via email and still working great.

i am not on home computer and don't have the resources handy, but if i remember correctly, some audio systems had 10 speakers, and some had 12... I think, some models even got 8 speakers... Even with DSP, you may have the subwoofers in the right rear compartment or, you might not... I need to pull the wiring diagrams again, and see how the schematics are laid out and what options they show... it will be much later today or even tomorrow.. |
I wouldn't buy a new amp until I was sure what the problem is.
Are the tweeters the ones making the noise and all other speakers are silent? FYI-I have DSP and replaced the speakers amp and sub-woofer with a set from Bavarian Soundwerks. Have had it installed for several years, never a problem. Big improvement over factory system. BSW has sets to work with DSP and have great tech support and directions are easy to follow. |
