Running Boards
Anyone buy OE running boards recently? What is the cheapest place to get these now?
|
~$729 shipped. Some BMW dealer on eBay.
Or SlickGT1 has contact info for it from a dealer in NJ. |
Craig @ Open Road BMW is probably going to be the cheapest, but I imagine it will probably still be about $700 or so.
|
Anyone know of some "good knock offs" that aren't so expensive? The e70 guys have them available for like $250, as well as an aero kit that looks pretty cool for about the same $250.
|
check ebay im sure theres a good knock off, the taiwan knock offs are pretty damn good. My cousin just bought a splitter for his 328I and its comparable to OEM.
|
Get the original. This issue has been discussed at length on these forums. The ebay $250 knock offs are a piece of shit.
Craig at Open Road BMW will have the best price. Still going to cost a pretty penny. I forgot what I paid, but it was way over $250. They will also take you like 4 hours to install if you have the sport flares. I love them. |

The Ebay knock off's will run you $500-520, some of the auctions have "make offer" but buy it now of $520. I wonder what kind of offer they would accept. The pictures look comparable to OE but it's too high of a price point for me to gamble on, and yes I want the running boards for my X. Ryan if you are gonna be the guinea pig on the $500 set let me know. For 00 06 BMW E53 x5 3 0i 4 4i Running Board Side Steps Bars SUV 4WD V8 AWD OE | eBay http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODAwWDgwMA...SmA9h/$_57.JPG I know it sucks, the E70 boards are like $250. |
Who want to chip-in for my $500 testing eBay running board?
|
TMV, go ahead and buy a set, I'll come by and critique them for you ...;)

Now if the aftermarkets were like $400 OBO on ebay, it would be much harder to not give them a try.... |
There is so much hardware included in the factory boards, that I fully understand why they cost so much. The aluminum part is structural. All the plastic has to line up with the under body plastic. The flares have to get replaced, which is more plastic. Do you really want to take the chance of it not looking factory compared to all the other plastic? $500 is a big chance of aftermarket. Plus all the damn clips, rivets, it is no joke at the amount of parts.

There's a similar year E53 I see around town occasionally with the OE running boards and it really looks sharp and would love to have a pair on mine. |
Why not try offering $400? Although to be honest I doubt they would take it. I usually can't get an offer accepted at 20% off, its gotta be hella expensive for them to ship as well.
I keep trying to read the auctions of the previously sold ones to see if the feedback is good, I mean people are definitely buying them, I just haven't found a review from someone on the forums yet. |
I'll put in my 2 cents here (may be worth less then that!) :dunno:
I have the factory boards on my X and I really enjoy the look...but I don't actually use them to get in and out of it. Mostly I just get my pants dirty getting out, granted I could keep my X cleaner or learn to jump out further to avoid that, but that's not always an option. I will say that they are nice to have when you're washing the X, they help to reach the middle of the roof  |
Okay, this is only an idea. Maybe we throw our money together and do a group buy direct from Asia/Alibaba (or similar outfit). From what I can tell, most have a minimum order of 10. This way you are getting it at wholesale. I know the guys on other forums have done the same for headers, etc. Just a thought.
Jay, I love the signature! :bustingup |

Non functional, cheap bolt on......., but I kind of dig them for what they are. Looks like Green Dragon has it. Looks like if 5 people purchased 5 sets, they would come in around 160? Am I reading that right? |

For 160/set id be in on that to try em out!

Um im on the iPhone. So searching is a pain in the ass. Search for him here. We referred him a lot here. I should make a contact for him though. Call him enough. If you can't find it, ill hook you up tomorrow.
|
If Morristown is advertising $692 plus tax I'm assuming Craig comes in around $645.

Quote I got from Craig was $830 Shipped to my house, am I missing a special deal? he stated the price went up.
|
Well the shipping is what kills it.
It's a huge box probably, and you're shipping all the way across the country. Morristown locally shows the price of $692. Like I said if you can find them under $700 thats about the going price is $700, I saw an ebay auction for $615 during Christmas time from Bloomfield BMW but you have to pay sales tax in NJ or $90 shipping if out of state, so it brings to $700 either way you slice it. |
If you guys still want, I can try out some of the knock offs and let you know how they look/function?

Green Dragon was looking up the suppliers on Aliexpress as it looks like you can get them cheaper direct from China then buying on ebay from a guy who already paid the Chinese for them lol! |
eh is not that big a deal, il try to find the best quality one at the best price (not the chinese knock off, but the taiwan as they seem to have a higher standard of quality)
|

Yea the shipping is deadly. |
il probably order tonight
|
Well let me know what seller/link you end up ordering from. If it turns out the set is good quality as opposed to the $700 OE set, you just may have done us a huge solid favor, hell, I might even order 8 quarts of Amsoil and a Mann filter if it turns out that the fit/quality is comparable to OE, and you saved me a few hundred bucks lol!
|
Lol well then, I guess that gives me more reason haha. Why wouldnt you order it anyway if you need it, support the outpost sponsors lol. Il let you all which i get and where and post a link back to it.

10-4. I'm all about supporting the sponsors but I'm a T6 man in my E53 and my Triumph but I wouldn't mind using the Amsoil in my wife's car or my Scag though, its always good to have some extra oil around on the shelf |
The T6 is nice but trust me, youll love the Amsoil, I actually just ran Rotella but switched it out, just didnt like running the diesel oil in my engine. Seems like a great oil but I just like using the dedicated Euro oil.

Not sure the value other than cosmetic to these. Truck isnt that high where they help getting into it and the cost is ridiculous not to mention install effort, factory instructions estimate 2 hours for install. Somehow I think thats optimistic after looking through all the steps they note.
|
I agree with Optimus. The 01 x5 I just bought has them and I don't care for them. I step to the ground when getting out and the back of my pants rubs against the running boards. Not a big deal in the summer, but messy in the winter. I would be willing to take them off and re-sell to someone on the forums.
|
Rev engineer if you are within a couple hours drive from Jersey I'll trade with you.
|
Edit nvm you're in MN, if you're coming to Bimmerfest or coming to Jersey anytime let me know!

You wanna dump those running boards let me know. I have no idea what shipping would be like, but I would be a candidate. |
