2001 X5 3.0 will not start, tried everything
So I get in the E53 one morning and it will not start.
The Engine cranks but it will not fire. Here are the things I have done tor try and troubleshoot. I checked for spark. I am getting a spark. It's orange, this normal? Should it be blue? Checked fuel pressure at the rail 47 psi That's within spec. Used a long screwdriver as a stethoscope to check for fuel injector pulse. I definitely hear the number one injector ticking while the engine is cranked. I brought the 7 year old battery in to have it checked at advanced auto. State of health is very good according to the EXP 1200 battery tester they have there. Its putting out 12.51 volts and 620 CCA under load. It is rated at 650CA. The counter guy said he could not in good conscience sell me a new battery as this one is perfectly fine. I disconnected the airbox and sprayed started fluid in the intake. It still would not hit. So to recap. I have spark I have injector pulse I have fuel pressure battery tests OK What am I missing here? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks |
Oh yeah. I also replaced the crankshaft sensor. What a treat that was. Man is that thing hard to get to. Still no start.

Try unpluging MAF and start.

No codes. I haven't done a comp test yet

Hmm. No codes, there is fuel, there is spark, injectors are working... Weird.
How was it running prior to this? |
Engine does not rotate at start
Battery is not well connected or corroded or faulty. The starting circuit be disconnected or loose. Starter motor failed. Engine ground strap is disconnected or broken. Engine hard to start when cold Battery is not well connected or corroded or faulty. Air filter could be dirty or clogged. Spark plug failed. Fuel injection or Ignition system failure. Engine stalls Fuel filter plugged. Fuel tank vent and pipes may be blocked or restricted. Spark plug failed. Fuel injection failure. |
just out of curiosity but have you pulled all your fuses under the dash and in the back quarter panel area and checked them?
I didnt realize until this weekend that there's a seperate fuse for the front driver side window and the front passenger side window. there might be multiple fuses for the ecu. might be one that controls the ignition circuit and one that controls the logic circuit. just saying its worth it to look. |
Where did you check the fuel pressure? A wild guess: fuel filter, injector.
