Headliner (inside "roof")

I am seriously "pissed" that the headliner on our 06 has stared to fall down.
This is something I would expect on a cheaper car that is over 15 years old, NOT a BMW X5...
Estimates are running just under $500, the sunroof panels need to be removed to do it, evidently a major job.

In Florida I would expect it especially if you don't have dark tinted windows. The heat inside the car just bakes that adhesive off.

If I lived in Florida I would be probably at least 15% tinted or even 5% limo tinted to try and keep the heat down. A huge aspect that people miss is the heat coming in from the open sunroof too when the shade is open but the glass is closed, I had my tinted as well when I did my windows as you'd be surprised how much heat comes in from that even though the windows are done.

You could do it yourself and save about 500 dollars. But in all honesty, knowing how long a project like that takes, 500 isn't a terrible price. Gotta Pay to PLay.

unless its a used car and has been smoked in terribly...

Daka 04-30-2014 10:09 AM

As soon as we buy a car we tint the windows, not really dark because its really hard to see out at night in the rain, no smoking in the car ever (no eating either) and the s/r panel is always closed...I just wonder if this is a normal occurrence (the car is Black, and has the sport pkg, dark roof liner)

I always tilt the sunroof and lower the windows to let the heat escape, instead of cooking inside. That one of the reason to have window windvisors on my X5.

Welcome to the new BM Trouble U new marketing strategy, just make a car that will last as long as the warranty.

Headliners on both of my Lotus are still up and they are well over thirty years old. Granted they weren't cheap cars at that time, but they were label "Kit cars" by many of the motor media.

What part is falling down/peeling? The sunroof panels do not need to be pulled to get the headliner out....unless you're doing those as well.

$500 isn't actually all that bad if that's the whole job....and if you're recovering the sunroof shades, $500 is actually quite reasonable. It's fairly easy to tip $100 for glue and GOOD MATERIAL.

If you want a recover job that's going to look good and last, it take's time to strip the old material and properly prep the headliner for the new stuff....I know because I've done it on mine.

Maybe consider removing/installing the headliner yourself to cut down some of the labor costs. I did a how-to: headliner removal thread a while back....perhaps give that a read.

What happened is, the fabric on the s/r panels "fell" I snipped it off so now what you see is the old glue on the metal sliding sections, then I noticed that the rest of it is starting to come loose also, so I think all the fabric needs to be replaced.
I'm told that the sliding panels need to be removed, to have the fabric replaced, so I guess it is a fairly big job...
