New Arnott air strut leaking
So...
My old bag blew out last week, i ordered arnott replacement through car id on ebay. They charge less then arnott site, and i also figured out i didnt have to give a core deposit which on arnotts site you do, so after i send the old one back may get $100 ontop of that yet... Anyways it was a flop.. got the old strut, out, put the new one in, attach everything back and before i go to tighten everything down i aired up the front with INPA, yup.. its leaking :wow: . Not from the bag, but from the top of the strut around the piston nut. Seems to be a defect, i took a breaker bar and tightened the piston nut as hard as i could, and it helped, but regardless its leaking. Spent 5 hours in the parking lot taking the old one out, putting the new one in, took the new one out again to see if i could figure something out etc. Called up arnott today, they said i had to go through carid since i got it through their distributor (box is sent from arnott anyways). So called up carid etc explained to the guy the issue, and should be getting overnighted part, after that ill ship them back the "new" one i got before... All in all, if i would have gotten a working part id be ok, especially since its my only car and i did this in the parking lot. But when i get a broken part its like may as well kick my nuts while your at it... Heres some pics: http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/z...B0233E4A38.jpg Around the rubber here under the piston nut is where the fk&*$ leak is coming from. http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/z...F0425D3696.jpg http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/z...748DFA93F1.jpg http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/z...42837E2DC2.jpg http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/z...56DAB6D581.jpg http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/z...B654E67548.jpg |
I recall a fairly recent thread about the same problem.

Really? If you find it please link it here.

I stand corrected, it was an Arnott issue but not the same problem. Link follows:
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...some-help.html It sucks to have to do the job twice. |
Maybe you got a bad bag. I couldn't help but notice your pics, please tell me you're not working on your car with a flimsy screw jack holding it up! Not trying to sound like a snob, I know everyone doesn't have a two car garage with a ton of tools, jacks and jack stands, but man that makes me cringe looking at those pics, looks dangerous as hell. Do you not have any friends you can borrow a hydraulic jack and jack stands (3 Ton stands are not that expensive) from?

@romeokc10
I just moved out here, alone, 1700 miles from home lol. I used to live in Eastern PA and had the comforts of living with my parents and floor jacks, garage, tools etc. All i have here is those 2 toolboxs, and the scissor jack. Im not new to this work so i can get by with minimal tools. But yes it isnt as nice as back home, and impact gunning everything/ 3 pump lift floor jack and all. |
Not saying it would have been different Pat, but I would have not ordered through ebay for an Arnott part as now it makes the return and swap process with the seller more finicky that being able to just phone Arnott in Florida and say "overnight me a different unit".
Hope the replacement goes smooth with the next one, and find yourself a harbor freight and spend the 20 bucks for jack stands dude! |

I agree at RB that it would have been easier. But the carid place gave me no issues. Got it all handled within 15 minutes. Plus i dont have to wait for core deposit to come back and can potentially get this out the door for $260 if i send my original one back and they send me $100.. lol.
And i may get some this weekend. |
And Carid isn't expecting a core back?
I can understand no core charge from the seller on ebay because they probably absorb it up front but Arnott looks for cores with the new units. The carid guy isn't gonna just absorb the core charge and not send anything back to Arnott, and then you can just send your core to Arnott yourself and get $100 from them. Something isn't making sense, otherwise no one would ever buy from Arnott because they could "get paid" by buying from distributors who don't charge a core. |
