Check Brake Light Warning

2005 X5 3.0i

I keep getting that "check brake light" warning so I loosen the bulbs and re-tighten and lights work fine. Couple days later, same happens again.
I've changed the bulbs &, cleaned every contact with a pencil eraser yet it still comes and goes. Any better idea before I take it to the shop?

Did you check the brakes?

It is a light warning, not a brake warning.

The sockets deteriorate over time. There are fixes that involve replacing or modifying the sockets. Do a search here.

It was still funny.....

It's a well-documented issue with the taillights design.
Search for the Mercedes (yes, a Mercedes part on your bimmer ) bulb socket mod.

I just had those exact symptoms and installed the MB pig tails on both sides of my vehicle and no problems since. its not that bad.
I believe about $20/pig tail in the US, but a fair bit more in Canada, but still worth having a reliable tail light, and cheaper than buying new tail light housings!!

Yes, he did. He posted that loosening and tightening the bulbs fixed it, but the problem came back.

Common rear light socket problem.
