BMW dropped the anti-theft radios that require a CODE with the generation of BMWs that started with the 1995 e38. The e39, e46, e52, and e53 followed with their own set-ups (MID/Nav/in-dash cass/in-dash CD) which where model specific and used multiple components. The e36 3 series & Z3 were the last BMW models to use the "code" anti-theft radios.

the OE screen is by default is black when it is not energized (well, kind of black - it is dark). For the screen to be white, it means, there is some reaction from the screen to the applied power. if the screen reacts to the applied power but does display an image of the menu (or any other standard image generated by the nav comp), that may mean that the nav computer is either not connected or malfunctioning.

This is all running on assumption that the original factory set up in the car was not altered.

after looking around.. i think i have more than one issue...

* update * the cluster doesn't say code anymore.
* i bought a used navi head unit and installed it but the screen is black.

* just to clarify .. when i go to start the x5 and turn key to on position the alarm goes off.. although when the key is on the on position the light and windows work. but my Navi screen is now black.

this morning after looking around with zero hope i saw this ugly battery cable.... can this be causing my truck to not start??

YES,

There is a charge (Pyrotechnic) in the cable to break the main connection in the event of an accident. You will need to replace this positive cable. let me do a little research and I will have the part number for you.

yes, take a volt meter and see what the voltage is at the burnt connection away from the battery side. The high voltage side should see little to ZERO (fat cable) The small cable is still connected to provide electric to the doors and windows. The next check is to read voltage at the starter on the FAT cable, again reading should be little to nothing as the voltage is not running down the fat cable from the battery to the alternator nor the starter.

Think of it as a garden hose with a kink. The burnt section is the break or kink in the line. Makes no difference what voltage is available at the battery if the cable is broken. No voltage to the starter = no cranky.
Others will chime in if my thinking is washed up.

The pyro charge should go off in case of an accident (i am sure that E53 in the recent thread from Brooklyn had the pyro discharge the cable). I am not saying that it would not go off without an accident, but that means that there is some serious malfunction in the system if the pyro fired up without the accident...

and besides, the CODE and the blank monitor...

DSM, you did not say of you have factory navigation in the trunk. Do you? It is located in the left side pocket in the trunk, there should be a unit saying DVD... there also should be a 6-disk changer, a DSP amp, a BT module. are any of those there?

i am trying to figure out if the monitors are happened to be dead, or if there are other issues...

oh, and that power cable - it needs to get fixed, as steven said, if the pyro went off, it will cut off everything fuel related, and the engine will not start, while the other electrical functions will continue to operate...

Tks for the info... Yes, I saw the horrible accident with the black x5..

I have the OEM wide screen navi with the navi in left side of the trunk.
