is a blown engine 5speed X5 worth anything?

guessing -not- but thought I'd ask here before I scrap it..

Ricky Bobby 05-28-2014 07:56 PM

Is it worth anything to rebuild you mean? If you have any mods you should sell them.

I'd be interested in depo headlights, running boards (aluminum), and a front skid plate, maybe black leather sport seats.

mrcarter20 05-28-2014 11:41 PM

If you happen to have a set of style 168 wheels on it I'd be interested.

I'll buy it...LSx swap!!

Daka 05-29-2014 08:03 AM

I would think it depends on the condition of the body and the interior....shouldn't be hard to find a good used motor for a 3.0....5 speeds are rather rare..

THE VEIN 05-29-2014 09:17 AM

Post some pics I would be interested

My 2006 350Z blew it's 12k monster stroker (built after Nissan's poorly designed VQ35DE #2 died) Having had enough and after being offered less than it's mods were worth, I got a 1k motor from eBay and traded it in for my X5.

I'd get a cheap motor and sell, trade, etc it.

TiAgX5 05-29-2014 11:11 AM

+1.

You can only expect around 1/3 book value (tops) when selling a car a vehicle with a blown motor.

Buyer has NO idea what else will be wrong with it when he gets it running (trans/TC/diffs/suspension/brakes/electronics).

Most owners won't get a basket case running because of all the other issues, they hope a fool comes along and ASSUMES everything else is good.

Phr3d 05-29-2014 12:55 PM

History: All service performed at dealer, 18k in ~36 mo. Clutch replaced at 135k (slipping), leads to poor running immediately after leaving dealer. Determine that last tune-up had used non-BMW plugs, add another few hunnert dollars, running well.
2 months later, valve clatter, running poorly, determine that oil is low, 1k mi after tear-down for clutch and (effective) level II service (2 green lights remain today).
6 mo later, 2k mi, engine is junk with shavings in oil pan.

We simply can't take it anymore.

what is a LSx swap?

TiAgX5 05-29-2014 02:10 PM

LSx swap is putting a GM motor/trans in it.

Daka 05-29-2014 02:19 PM

Having done the Chev 350/700R4 conversion to a Jag XJ6 lll, If this comes out anything like that it would be GREAT...
The Chev conversion was really easy with every part available from Johns Jags in TX, it was basically a bolt in....
How hard could the X5 with a manual be?
Maybe even depending on where you live, get rid of the front drive assembly...??

Hmm. This could get interesting.

~140k mi, presently located at DM BMW in Iowa.
I will need to play wheel swap as no one seemed to care much for my choice of wheels, it will be left with my 57's (winter wheels) and Pirelli Zero's with approx 4k tread remaining.
all else stays (4.8i exhaust, DEPO front/rear lights, ipod connection) as well as a brand new clutch, most door and window mechs replaced in last two years, all new shifter bearings etc, calipers cleaned/painted black)

Vehicle has an unfortunate scratch down the side that we don't know when/how it occurred, seems to be a white plastic material that might buff out, no metal damage. One scuff on black plastic up front. Entire front was cleaned up, buffed out and repainted 2011 when headlights were installed, looks new/good excepting scuff. Non-sport Interior very good, but has had smokers.

some pics in album albeit without the pictured wheels. more here:

All service performed/recorded at DM BMW, approx $8k. They inspected the drive-line today and stated that it -was- worth popping in a BMW-remanufactured heart, we have not completely decided that we are unwilling to pay the $7500 plus labor to do so. (used engine is cheaper, of course).

Ebay presently has a sport version of this selling at $9k-reserve not met, so I guess I will see if/where the offers fall.

Sarek 05-30-2014 09:19 PM

I could use it....

Phr3d 06-05-2014 12:55 AM

posting to Craigs tomorrow, gonna ask $3500 and see what happens -- no idea What to ask, to be honest.

sorry that this wound up looking like an ad, I didn't know there would be interest, I was looking for advice. (to mods, I am a past premiere member and plate-frame owner, fwiw)

m5james 06-07-2014 03:59 AM

I bought my 01 X5 w/ iForged 20's for $8k w/ 13xk on the clock. My buddy just bought an 01 540i touring from a junkyard for $1300 that only had a failing EDC and a mismatched wheel, otherwise it seems fine. $3500 is a starting point, but I wouldn't hold your breathe on selling it like that unless you find someone like myself who's mechanically inclined enough to handle the engine swap.

Phr3d 06-29-2014 08:18 AM

james, thanx for the thots - $3.5k produced nothing, $2.5k produced nothing.
presently installing a new engine with warranty for duh, more than he could ever be worth. Coulda' bought someone else's probs (540 touring, I'll be interested to hear how that turned out as we planned to go to a 2001 540i 92K mi), but couldn't do it AGAIN, after the thousands we put into Dancer to make sure he was Always fully and carefully maintained.

So we still got him, be a couple weeks before he is outa' ICU with his new heart and the price is just.plain.ICU.scary. Busts hell outa' the down payment for the Tesla X we were saving for - long-short, last BMW or any ICE in this lifetime.. wholly do not recommend a 3.0i E53, and just like all the others with scary stories.. I didn't believe them, I don't expect anyone to believe me.. but if you really like the E53, bring a Ferrari budget.

b well all, and thanks for the help over the years.

I am just curious, what was the cause of "blown engine"?

From post #10......."you can expect around 1/3 book value".

Ricky Bobby 06-29-2014 11:04 AM

Considering the M54B30 is arguably the most reliable engine in the E53 platform I'm surprised to hear this.

What was the cause again?

JCL 06-29-2014 12:56 PM

IIRC, it was a relatively high mileage used vehicle purchase.

If an engine fails at low miles, we look to design and manufacturing issues.

If an engine fails at higher mileage, we look to maintenance issues.

So, one of the first things would be to review all maintenance records and determine what oil was used, what filter was used, what change interval was used, and who did the maintenance.

diyanich 06-29-2014 10:01 PM

Yes,
I am curious about the shavings too.
It could be just a failed guide as in an M62 engine, when the timing chain slams the lower timing cover.
OP is sick of it,but a good diagnosis would be a better start than giving it away for no money.
