TwinTurboGTR 06-06-2014 06:04 PM

And then she was gone... But at least I am still here. Part out info in FS section.

I've been in contact with a few forum members and they know what's going on, but i just got final word from my insurance company, so I think it is time to share my story.

My 2004 4.8 IS and I were in an accident on Monday 6/2. It was a head on crash and I found out today, it was a drunk driver. We struck each other going 40 MPH. I made it out alive, but it is because of my X5. The driver crossed into my lane of traffic within 10 feet in front of me. The next thing I knew, I woke up in the ER with EMS and police telling me how lucky I was to be alive. I first thought it was an over exaggeration. I thought, 'She can be put back together. I'm sure it's not that bad." Even my father saw the X and ran to the officer and asked, "Was my son killed." I shed a tear when I saw his face. Anyways, I managed to escape with a broken left toe, some second degree burns from the airbag, a few cuts, and some major bruising... but I am still here.

When I was allowed to go get my belongings from my X, I was excited to go see her. It was until the Supervisor pointed me in the direction of where she was parked and the moment I saw her, is when reality set in. I was really lucky. Everyone who said I was lucky to not have been killed was right. It wasn't an exaggeration. My X5 saved my life as well as BMW assist. Police notified me that the first call they got about the accident was from BMW assist. Their response time was 7 minutes.

So she is gone. Insurance evaluated it and deemed it a total loss. They are giving me an option to buy it back for a good price. So I am thinking of possibly starting a part out section. But I want to see if anyone would be interested in any parts. So a quick and dirty part of it would be, all interior parts, exterior parts would be up for grabs minus the entire front clip and left front and rear door. So If i get enough feelers, I will buy the car back and help those that need OE parts for cheap. So if I get enough, i'll get my stuff together and start it.

Now to the pictures...http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/...l/IMG_1238.jpg

Woow. Glad you made it out ok.

xbimma 06-06-2014 06:24 PM

I'm interested in your rims. Are they ok?

03/2003 E53 X5 4.4i M62 FB 33

Qsilver7 06-06-2014 06:24 PM

Wow....ditto, glad you made it without any severe injuries. A vehicle can be replace...but a life can't. Did the drunk driver survive?

Riggodeaux 06-06-2014 06:48 PM

Wow. Glad you are ok, sorry bout the X5. Like xbimma, I might be interested in the 168s [and maybe tires, if they are summers], if the 168s condition are good. You can PM me with details. Again, the best news is you are ok. I can only imagine how relieved your family is ....

TwinTurboGTR 06-06-2014 06:49 PM

Thanks Q. That is very true and of course he did. Not a scratch.

Riggodeaux 06-06-2014 06:49 PM

That St. Christopher's hanging from the mirror did its job, too ......

TwinTurboGTR 06-06-2014 06:50 PM

Hey Riggo, thanks. Yeah, they were. But after I got the accident report, they just became enraged, so was I.

Riggodeaux 06-06-2014 06:51 PM

I don't need it, but if you have an OEM hitch on the back, there is a good market for that .....

TwinTurboGTR 06-06-2014 06:54 PM

Yeah, I had that, my friend from HS prayer card and a cross I wear on my neck... Unfortunately during the accident, the force was so great, the chain must have broke and flew out the window because when I got home from the hospital, all of my belongings were returned but my chain and cross were never mentioned as items listed.

Ricky Bobby 06-06-2014 07:04 PM

I never go for a motorcycle ride without st Christopher in my pocket and Jesus (cross) on my neck. I am that faithful.
Glad you're alive my friend

X5SND 06-06-2014 07:19 PM

Good to hear you're on the mend! Definitely a testament to the solid construction of the X! Sad to see another one bite the dust from someone else's stupidity!

....btw is that a heated wheel I spy with my little eye??

TwinTurboGTR 06-06-2014 07:23 PM

Yeah I've had triple protection for 10+ years and every accident I have been in, I've never been super seriously coma injured. So they are def keeping an eye on me. And as for the steering wheel... your eye is unfortunately mistaken... I wish it was heated then I would be a bad ass with warm hands... Did that statement go against guycode? lol

lhordmclain 06-06-2014 07:23 PM

Take it easy and wishing you a fast recovery from your injuries.

motordavid 06-06-2014 08:09 PM

TT GTR,
Wow...your X saved your azz.
It's a car.

Very good to read you are OK and on the mend.
Get back to shape and Good Luck.
mD

puddinboo 06-06-2014 10:39 PM

glad your ok hope you feel better soon, to bad for the X ,but you should be able to find another 1 one day when your ready, those crush zones in the front saved your life. (they absorb alot of impact ) sometimes people wonder why vehicles today crumple up easier than they did back in the 80`s or earlier. back then they didn`t have crush zones(indents in the metal to make it weak so they collapse like an acordian )

Lol! Real men understand the value of a heated steering wheel!

Ctsiegf 06-07-2014 12:05 AM

Wow man. Glad you're okay!

PropellerHead 06-07-2014 03:20 AM

Glad to hear you're OK. I have been looking for an excuse to get black door panels and replace my seats with black ones. Maybe you could be the enabler. :dunno:

TwinTurboGTR 06-07-2014 11:35 AM

Thanks everyone. Yeah, those crumple zones did their job entirely. Prop... Sure, your excuse has arrived! lol. As for the car, I settled with insurance today and bought the X back, so looks like I will be parting it out. I didn't realize my premier membership expired, so I will work on a list this weekend and then get everything set by monday. I am going to set up a separate thread in the forum for the inventory and then post the items in the FS section. Thanks again to everyone that sent me good words, I do appreciate it very much. Now time to recover. Have a happy weekend everyone.

jsoto 06-07-2014 06:39 PM

OMG TTGTR . In reading this, glad that you woke up in the ER . Things could have been worse. Be mindful of any post injuries. Sometimes, these things don't crop up till months later !

Glad you are alright. I showed your thread to my wife. I read this post to her and she stated: "Oh, he'd have more than scratches after I got done with him!" Yeah, I married well. :D

As for parting out, how's the interior trim?

g300d 06-08-2014 12:19 AM

Glad to see you walked away from that one man.

Hope you make a full recovery and get reimbursed in full for everything!

4.8isX5 06-09-2014 01:28 AM

Wow! Glad you are ok man.. Sucks to see another 4.8 bite the dust.

The car definitely is safe and its good to know that, not even an inch of penetration or anything into the cabin whatsoever.

TwinTurboGTR 06-09-2014 08:09 AM

Hey everyone. Thanks for the kind words. Still in recovery mode. Just working on trying to get the car here now. The interior is in fine shape. Dusty from the airbag, but it was just detailed the Sunday before the accident. I've gotten the part out process ready as to the rules and such, so will be posting those soon.

tmv 06-09-2014 08:57 AM

Glad you only had minor injury and still here with us, buddy. The X5 sacrificed to save you. That's one big reason why I drive BMWs. I'm sure you will be back in one.
Wishing you a speedy recovery, TwinTurboGTR.

Rons53 06-09-2014 11:56 AM

Yikes. Good to hear you were able to walk away. If you part out I would be interested in your interior.

Clockwork 06-09-2014 12:17 PM

Wishes in getting back to perfect health soon!
Glad the X is such a reliable car in accidents. the accident posts her over the last few years just continuously prove this. Makes me feel safer driving my family around in him!!

And thank you for trying to help the X5 community out by buyin your x back from ins. thats awesome of you to do that.
Mike in Calgary

SlickGT1 06-09-2014 01:06 PM

Wow holy shit Y. You lucky son of a gun. How are you feeling?

That is a sad sight. I sure hope you look better.

Texted you too.

I will take a bunch of shit from that sad beast of your.

davewlee 06-09-2014 03:28 PM

WOW... GLAD you MADE IT OUT TO SEE ANOTHER DAY... Hope you have a speedy recovery.

UCrewX5 06-09-2014 03:42 PM

Given what he just went through, a complimentary 1 year renewal of your Premier Membership has been sent your way. So very glad to hear that you came away in one piece. As was previously noted, be sure to watch out for after affects, and you may want to consult with an attorney that specializes in personal injuries resulting from drunk drivers. Make the SOB pay the price for making stupid decisions.

I am at a loss for words right now. Thank you! Thank you very much! I was actually in a group text with Naz and RB and they said they just gave away a membership. I was thrilled to hear! When I asked who, they both said "You!" lol. Thank you again. Thank you for your support everyone. I am happy to have found this forum and even happier to help everyone and to see everyone come together to help me. So thank you all again.

I'm sorry I didn't get the thread up today. Was at the doctors all day with testing, but tomorrow will be the day I will post it all.

Thank you all again.

Ricky Bobby 06-09-2014 07:28 PM

You wouldn't find that kinda class on E46Fanatics lol!

Riggodeaux 06-09-2014 07:48 PM

No rush, 'Premier' Twin. Take your time and get your list together.

z168 06-09-2014 07:52 PM

wow. like many here have already said - the X saved your life

Riggodeaux 06-09-2014 08:03 PM

And if you or anyone else here is interested, a nice looking 2005 black 4.4 with, it appears, truffelbroun sportsitze just came on the market in my 'work' neighborhood. On craigslist at 2005 BMW X5 4.4i ***11,500***
Nope, not mine, but reasonably priced if in as good a condition as it looks.

I don't have a problem with making him pay (financially and otherwise) for his mistake, I believe in redemption. If this is a first offense, then I would encourage you to lean towards supporting a sentencing that sends him to the equivalent of 'drug court' if such a thing exists in your area. Hopefully this is his 'rock bottom' and he can turn his life around and be a non-threat on the roads and a productive member of society. If he's a repeat offender, then never mind.

You guys are just the best. Seriously. Pure class.

Young, sometimes the pain doesn't start for a few weeks. So take it easy, and mind your posture. I can creep up on you. 2 weeks after I was T-boned on my bike, I woke up, and had to be dressed and carried by my brother to the doctors. Cortisone steroid shot to the back and I was moving again. Keep your phone close by dude.

rayxi 06-10-2014 02:44 PM

Glad to hear you will be Ok. The X5 took one for the team!
Get well first. Part out later.

TwinTurboGTR 06-10-2014 06:38 PM

Part out section is up in the FS Forum for anyone interested.

e30cabrio 06-10-2014 08:17 PM

Wow. That is horrible. Glad you are ok.

Jungerishere 06-10-2014 10:48 PM

Sorry to see your X in this condition but glad that you are OK.

I'm surprised that the passenger side airbag did not deploy nor the A-pillar airbags.

relentlessone 06-13-2014 11:57 AM

Even though I sold my X, I still check back here every once in a while and just saw this thread. I'm sad to see another 4.8is gone, but glad to see you made it out alive. Good luck with the part out!

TerminatorX5 06-13-2014 07:58 PM

Oh my God, I wasn't checking the forum for a few days and look what happened!!!

dude, I am glad that you are ok... like everyone else here, i think that piece of metal can be replaced, even though one gets attached to a car...

If I were running a BMW dealership, I would have searched out cars like yours and would put them up for a display along with the owner's story - best advertisement there is for the marque safety...

It is hard to replace an E53, especially in "is" trim with something of similar stance - but what do you have in plans for the next ride? an E70? F15? or something entirely different?..

Ricky Bobby 06-13-2014 09:19 PM

I'm with Fariz on this one. The photos alone sell the safety. I'm literally about to get my wife an E70 or E83 just because of the safety factor. I can't imagine she would have fared well in that crash with her Rav4....

THE VEIN 06-22-2014 11:43 AM

How does bmw assist work? Is it something that's a subscription only? Or all x5s that came with it haves it?

TerminatorX5 06-23-2014 12:16 AM

i thought it was a subscription based service. seems that starting with 2014 model year, they will include the BMW assist for 10 years at no cost - right now if it part of the 4 year plan... not sure how it works on the older models - i have removed my TCU unit and installed a ULF unit, which probably does not sport the Assist hardware...

anyone has better info on this?

JaySpec7 06-23-2014 01:12 AM

Oh man.. just read this! Glad your okay and speedy recovery!! My wife always says our X5 will save us one day!!

TwinTurboGTR 06-23-2014 07:38 AM

Thanks for the words everyone. Assist is a sub based service, but I think during an emergency, they will come on. I didn't subscribe to the service, but one time I was cleaning the inside and hit the SOS button and an operator came online. I apologized for the mistake. Then with the accident, apparently they came one and gave rescue my GPS coordinates and dispatched EMS and police. SO in an emergency, it will work, but if you are asking for directions or for them to make dinner reservations, I think they will tell you you don't have that service.

The seat sensors and accelerometers define the airbag deployment pattern.

The passenger bag didn't go off because the seat sensor knew it was empty, the A-pillar airbag didn't because the impact force direction and/or deployment threshold was not reached.

Big "J" 06-23-2014 02:01 PM

Hey TTGTR!

Been away and just saw this. Glad you're ok and recovering. Faith and prayers are always good copliots!
Another check mark for BMW safety....and what the wife and I will keep in the garage!

God speed and let us know what your next joy ride will be!

mgbmwx5 06-23-2014 02:45 PM

Wow what a bummer! SO Glad you are OK! The E53s are like tanks and people live to tell about it, thank God you weren't driving anything else but a BMW!

m5james 07-15-2014 04:00 AM

Power folding mirrors or at least the power window switch that has the power folding button? I recently got cabinets in the garage that have tightened things up enough so that I'm tired of getting out every time to make sure I clear on the passenger side :D

Hey, Sorry but the mirrors and the switch have been sold. Hopefully the other inquiries you put out still have the assemblies.

Thanks.

TwinsPoppa 07-16-2014 11:53 AM

Dang! Just saw this. Glad you're okay man. It's not your time. Sorry to hear and too bad about the X.

Hope everything else is good with you and that you'll still come to Bimmerfest East on Aug 2nd.

Keep in touch!

Jose

kwalk 07-16-2014 01:06 PM

Wow! I saw the part out thread, but just now seeing the what really happened thread. God bless you! I'm glad you're okay and I'm sorry you lost your car. You are truly a blessed man! It's very honorable what you have done for the community. Not to hijack, but we had a drunk driver to t-bone us in 06 in our camry and made it out alive really terrible (found my son a block away ejected from vehicle, husband lifeflighted), so I know how you feel and my heart goes out to you and your family.

bcredliner 07-16-2014 03:23 PM

Gives me chills. Unlucky when you think of losing your 4.6. Lucky when you are there to say goodbye.
