My last oil change was about 8000 miles ago. I'm changing it today Ido have 186k on the clock

That's about 1000 more miles then what I follow for oil change, but still 7000 less then what BM Trouble U recommends. Oil does break down due to combustion, that's why the oil turns black. I would just change the oil and see if the problem doesn't go away.

Agree with Ricky,

In all of my BMWs, oil change is done every 5K or so b/c I do 50-50 city-hwy driving.

I use synthetic Mobil1 5W30 in winter, and 10W30 in summer (Walmart has best price for a jug of 5 qts $24).

At next oil change, remove the oil P switch (may as well put a new switch in for $10), crank for 2-3 sec to push some crap out.
With fresh oil, the red light should go away.

I'm ordering the switch now and doing the oil change when I get home. Should the oil light be on? because its not on

No the service indicator sucks. I would reset it when done though, make your own service interval.

1+,

The Service Interval is only good for "reminding", pretty much like your alarm clock "wake up and go to work".

Make up your own maintenance spread sheet and stick to it.
- Engine Oil change, let's say every 5K-6K.
- ATF flush let's say every 50K
- Air filters etc.
Tons of info in different forums.

The idea is to stay away from BMW published maintenance schedule which is geared toward P.R. more than "science".
