No pusher / auxilary fan
Hey guys, I've been researching on here about my AC not cooling down at idle. Everything points to the pusher / auxiliary fan not working, so I started to diagnose and did not find a pusher fan in front. Did BMW not put them on some models? My X5 is used so could someone have removed it? It's obvious that i'm in need since the AC does not cool until I get moving. Thanks all!

You don't have an aux fan.
They are installed only if you have a fan clutch on the Water Pump pulley. Quote:

Thanks for the reply. Guess I still have troubleshooting to do as to why my AC doesn't get cold until I start driving. Puller fan is working at idle.

Have you tried using water to clean out the condenser? All that dirt and road debris could be blocking air flow through the condenser.
I believe all 6 cylinders X5 came with the Aux fan and some V8 came with the fan as can be seen in this photo. http://www.xoutpost.com/attachments/...01-x5-4.4i.jpg You should check to see if the plug for the fan is clipped to the radiator shroud, on the left side as you face the engine bay. It has two thick wires and oone skinny wire. |
I believe the aux fan started disappearing when the N62 V8 came out. It's the only e53 I've seen that doesn't have one. I know that I searched in silence when I first got my 06 X5 4.4...I thought I was just overlooking it...and that it was hidden somewhere I just couldn't see/find it. :eeps:
Then someone finally mentioned that the N62 did bring a change (as mentioned above) and that some actually don't have the aux fan. See below...it's missing just as conspicuously as a small child missing their 2 front teeth. :D |
I checked airflow. Seems to be pretty good from the front through the radiator. I blew air using my compressor on low pressure. Also, I didn't see any wires hanging in the front side.
The fan behind the radiator is electric - not clutch driven. I just started it and the fan didn't come on initially. However, I checked it later and it was running when the engine warmed up. I have no dash lights. I guess I'll have to take to a shop. any other suggestions? |
My AC isn’t blowing cold air, just pushing ambient air temps, the AC blows air at various speeds, just not cold air - I went to check the Aux fan and realized there wasn’t one. Did the OP ever figure out what was causing this?

The auxiliary fan, if you have one, is added engine cooling especially when the air conditioning is on as the engine tends to run hotter. As such the aux fan would not impact initial cooling capability of the AC. As mentioned previously, the first thing I would do is check the refrigerant level. I don't recommend just buying the cans at local parts store. I would have it done by someplace that has the proper equipment and can check for leaks.
