I went to U-Haul's website and entered a 2000 X5 with 6000lbs towing and a 2000 528i and it says the combo works with their auto transport. If you enter your exact specifics and it gives the green light, you should be ok.

I've rented an auto transport from UHaul plenty of times to tow my e36m3 or e46m3 track cars. I've never had any issues and this is with the x5 3.0L.

I've towed heavier trailers from U Haul several times, up to the rated towing capacity of the X5 and X3.

With the X5 they did want to inspect my hitch. They had a letter on file in their operations manual, which they showed me, warning them of failures of aftermarket hitches on E53 X5s. I gather it cost them some money. I showed them that my receiver and wiring were OE and they were fine with it.

It may be a local response to a previous problem rental.

I had to rent something to rescue my daughter yesterday; she was stranded about 2 hours away with an e36 that popped a spark plug out its head. U-Haul gave me the same runaround about towing a 318ti on a flatbed -- too heavy they said -- so I ended up with a dolly. The guy also told me that I'd have to drop the driveshaft on it, even though it was a manual transmission; gave me the explanation of why it would be bad for the trans, which was their canned response for not towing an automatic, and I just laughed at him. I didn't tell them about towing the e32 out; I figured they'd tell me it was too heavy. The towing went very smoothly; I wish I could say the same about the spark plug repair. :(
