any advice on my 4.6is sale?
So my 02 x5 4.6is has been for sale for a couple of weeks now and there hasn't been any real interest. Does anyone have any advice on what to include to make my add better?
02 x5 4.6is updated pictures Thanks!! |
I would say that you're probably exaggerating a little too much.
Like the best 4.6is in the country and the negations don't help at all but actually can annoy a potential buyer "Never flush a ZF over 100k" "Never use Mobil 1 in bmw's" And sometimes the long list of preventive maintenance doesn't help when selling to the regular Joe on craigslist...it can scare them off by thinking it's not a reliable truck to own...very few people are still interested in v8 BMW's nowadays..especially E53's.. In my opinion , a more relaxed ad will attract more interest.. Whoever is looking for a 4.6is already knows it's rare.. Not trying to sound like a jrk just trying to help .. GLWS |
I use Mobil1 in all my BMW's, NEVER had an issue.
$5200 more for .2 liters vs what I paid for my 4.4 w/ the same mileage is a hard pill to swallow if people don't know better. I don't recall any mention of it being an Alpina made engine either. Those of us who know what a 4.6 is is one thing, but you're competing w/ countless 3.0 and 4.4 models that often go for half of what you're asking. Rare means it's not going to sell like a dime a dozen vehicle, so either price it to sell quickly or wait for the right buyer. |
I guess I made the ad the way it is because when I was looking for the right X I specifically wanted a good list of preventative done. And I didn't mean made by Alpina, I guess I meant "inspired". And you weren't a jerk at all. It's just constructive criticism. It's what I was looking for.

IMO the ad's sole purpose is to generate enough interest that some potential buyers will contact you. Then you can determine what interests them and emphasize those points - not to mislead them but just to respond to their preferences.
So I would shorten the ad and focus on overall condition, and maybe that it has been properly/super maintained. I would mention the v8 because there are a few of us who will only buy v8, but you might have to mention fuel economy (hwy) in case the bigger engine scares off the Prius set. |
Your asking too much... $16900 with winter wheels???? You're crazy

Try nationwide ad. Buyers looking for "is" model are willing to travel for a good one. Leave all the maintenance stuff on there. If they are going to pay premium price, they want to know the condition and maintenance history. Also, no offense, most buyers looking for E53 IS model is looking for 4.8 over 4.6 and the price of your X is on the high side for the mileage. I have seen many 4.8is with lower miles for less. You have a beautiful X there. Good luck to you...

Personally I dont see CL as a true outlet for real serious buyers anyway over a certain price point but it seems not unusual for cars over 100k to sit idle for a while until the right person comes along anyway. Maybe if your a BMWCCA member post an ad in there or your local BMW chapter's publication. Try going to some local car events with the vehicle and its history and records.
If your not doing these things I would try them. Basically you want visibility. Try cross marketing it, if your on other boards put ads up there too or try Autotrader. You just want people talking about it that one person that see's it might not want it but may know someone who does. This is an enthusiasts vehicle and the average Joe on CL looking for SUV isnt your target buyer IMHO. NOTE: I just saw one at dealer with just shy of 80k sell for $18.5k with I think the same work you had completed and was noted as well so the buyers are out there but the real buyers of these are generally not looking in CL. And BTW love the pic of my x5 in the ad. GLWS |
List it in Rondel mag.
Serious BMW buyers nationwide will see it. |
I'm really getting sick of Alpina name dropping when it comes to the 4.6, it doesn't aid in the sale, Alpina engineering may have inspired to creation of a more powerful M62 with higher displacement but to the best of my knowledge they were not the ones who developed the model.
My honest opinion? For 140k+ miles, it better have a long list of preventative and maintenance performed, it does not add value to me. The trans could shit the bed tomorrow and the new owner would have a 4k+ repair. It's an 11 year old E53 with 140k miles to the average buyer, in a "pretty blue". Even to an enthusiast I couldn't see dropping more than 10-11k max on it, the facelift models are more desirable aesthetic wise and you can get a 4.4 facelift sport package for 10k or under, with less miles at this point. Just my honest feedback. |
