2006 X5 4.4 Upper trunk lid problem

Upper trunk lid latch doesn't operate . I can hear a few clicking sounds, but no unlatch. Doesn't work from key, pressure pad on lid, or button on front console. Bottom lid works fine with pressure switch.
All other doors and windows are fine.

Fuse for upper lid is good.

Although my first guess is that the actuator needs replacing, are there any known wiring issues or relay things I should check before I spend the bucks to replace the actuator?

If I need the actuator, where is the best place/price that you know about. Thanks for your help.

The hatch refuses to open? How were you able to check the lower tailgate if the upper doesnt open? Just trying to understand the situation better.

Are you using the manual release on the inside lid? If so, does the mechanism latch shut when you lower the hatch?

There is a relay for the top hatch on the right side of trunk, am not sure now which exactly. But I'm guessing since there is clicking, there is electricity to the latch though.

Although IIRC the pad switch can be clicking with a dead latch mechanism though. Most o the failures I've seen (and the one I experienced) was the latch refusing to pull the lid closed.

I used the internal emergency latch release to open the top lid. With the top lid open, I pressed the pressure pad to successfully open the bottom lid.

The lid closes fine. It just wont respond to any of the 3 opening command points: key, pressure pad, button on console.
It only opens with the emergency latch pull.

Ah I see. First time I've seen this mode of failure.

IIRC there are 3 fuses related to the lid mechanism. 2 in the glove box, 1 in the trunk.

Then there is a relay for the lid as well, in the trunk, right compartment, above the fuses.

A member here (Qsilver7 IIRC) posted the system diagram in a thread here. Will see if I happened to save it.

Here's a guy who had the same problem who solved it by pulling the relay and putting it back in. Hopefully yours is as easy a fix:

And here is another threa with lots of good info on the hatch latch mechanism:

I pulled the "Trunk lid" and "SCA Trunk Lid" replays and replaced them. They didn't seem to change anything. However- once I started the car to see if I had screwed up anything else by pulling the relays, I checked again and the lid began to function properly.

I'm not sure if the car starting applied more voltage and reset the relay completely, or possibly just coincidence...... Or maybe the power up of the car reset some control logic somewhere....

Anyway, the lid works now- I really appreciate your help!

Looks like you fell into the lucky category as far as latch problems go lol!

Good to hear, mine was a lot more involved, ugh.

Anytime, glad to help.

Hi all, hopefully some one can help.
I’m having problems with the upper lid opening on its own at random. The handle wasnt working so I opened it up and tried to clean the little sensors but managed to completely break them, so I just took them out and relied on the key fob or inside switch to open the boot. It was fine like this for a couple of months and now the upper lid just opens randomly, even when driving it just unlocks, hit a bump and then it locks again. I looked up on RealOEM and it gave me the part number and decsription for the sky blue relays so I bought two new ones but when trying to put them in they spark and blow the fuse. It was the purple relays that are in and when I take the fuse out for the upper lid I can hear it clicking away, obviously this would be the upper boot lid opening.
Thoughts ideas anyone?
Thanks, Sean.

You have a short in the wiring somewhere. That's is why you have a spark when you plugged in the relays and why the fuse blew out. That could also be why the trunk pops open when you hit a bump.

Thanks for the reply.
The lid locks when hitting bumps, it opens randomly when stationary.
I’ve read about the wireing and not a job I want to tackle, is there a reletively easy way to check the wireing?

I should also state that its a 2006 N62 that I have, if that happens to make a difference in anyway.

Did you replace the tailgate button? mine was going bad, then went completely dead but sometimes when I turned the car off, it would open the tailgate. Changed the handle assembly (with the switch and plate lights) and now its back to normal.

Seanc333 01-04-2018 12:12 PM

Havent done anything with the button, waiting on new rear handle assembly coming. I’m wondering if because I broke all the micro switches in the handle when I tried to clean it, if thats whats now causing it to open randomly.

scourtaud23 01-04-2018 05:49 PM

It could very well be it... You'll have to wait for the handle assembly to know.

Seanc333 01-12-2018 07:38 PM

Replaced handle assembly and all seems to be good, no more lid opening on its own!!
