Passenger window horrible noise.
I just installed a new window regulator / motor on my passenger side. It sounds horrible!!! Lol... Has anyone ran into this before? The regulator was a cheap aftermarket that I am starting to regret purchasing. Could the window be out of alignment? Is BMW the only brand to go with? Any help would be appreciated!

Also I noticed the motor seems to be right against the door frame: Attachment 64202 |

Anyone out there? I posted this twice, I'm desperate here!!!! Reps for anyone that can shed some light here!

That's either just the sound of the motor or the motor could be touching the car and amplifying the sound
|
I've had cars with the windows sounding like that on all of them

Thanks for the reply! I am waiting for new motor, hopefully this does the trick! I might have to put something between the motor and door or replace the regulator.... Again!!!! This time with a legit one not a cheap after market.

I used an aftermarket regulator I got on Amazon with no problem. The original motor seemed fine. Switch had gone bad - new switches have a drain hole on the bottom, so I guess someone figured out that the do get a little snow/rain on them from time to time.
I don't recall the motor touching the inside metal part of the door - I guess I would inspect it carefully to make sure the regulator was seated correctly and not out of kilter and pushing the motor against the door frame. |
Something does not seem right about it, the fact that the motor makes that noise and its pressed right against the door. I have changed these regulators many times in the past for other cars and never ran into any problems until the X5... Do you recall what regulator on amazon you purchased? My next question is how could it not be installed correctly? all the screw holes lined up with the bolts and the window seems to slid through the inner track. Thanks again for your response David.X5!

Is it touching the door? I'm sure that's why it sounds like that, if so. Or more likely it's a tiny gap between the motor and the door, and when the motor is on, it's vibrating just enough to contact the door rapidly and repeatedly. Where'd you get the motor from? It could be the wrong part?

Yes it's snug right against the door! My new motor came in today! Unfortunately I won't be able to install it until Friday due to a last minute business trip... If the motor is still up against the door after this install I am returning the regulator and going with a BMW part unless anyone can give me an aftermarket brand worth using??? DillonInCO thanks for the help!

I know its been a few months, but just noticed this and decided to add the part number in case someone else comes across it - I used the Dorman 740-488 (Front Drivers side) regulator with no problems. Over a year now.
There are two funny screws & star shape nuts that hold the window glass to the plastic clip on the regulator. I have had them vibrate loose, so I now use a little drop of the removable loctite. You definitely don't want to over tighten them. Haven't had to go back yet. |
I have been too busy to post my solution to the problem. I compared the aftermarket to the BMW regulator. All measurements were on point except for two things. The threaded studs on the aftermarket were 1/8 of an inch longer and the BMW regulator also had a raised surface around each stud that was thicker than the aftermarket regulator. I ended up shimming the studs on the after market regulator up with some flat washers until they were the same length as the studs on the original bmw regulator the finished results:
https://vimeo.com/111853756 I also threw out the cheap motor that was supplied with the aftermarket and used the Bosch motor from the BMWS regulator. I purchased this on ebay for $34.00 and recommend purchasing this with the motor assembly. Reason being, my drivers side just broke (plastic clip snapped) and I purchased the same aftermarket regulator without the motor and ran into an issue with the motor lining up (holes were not lines up when gear assembly was crimped to guide rails). For an extra $4.00 this can be avoided. These aftermarket regulators are priced cheap and are made out of decent material: SST Springs, painted carbon steel guide rails, UHMW / SST clips (more durable than BMWs oem). Link for what I purchased is posted below: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...d=151170360778 Message me if you have any questions. |
