Anyone use winter tires on 19" Style 63's?
I've got summer tires on style 87's and would like to use the stock 4.4 Sport wheels with winter tires but there aren't any in the correct size. Curious if anyone else is running a similar wheel etc in 19" with winter tires in a different size.

Not me, but I wish tire makers would up the antie a bit. I want to see 20" 40/45 series mud tires and you need 19" snow tires. How about some 20" snow tires too:)

There are many 20" 40 series winter tires available. check the tire rack.

They do and I had them but didn't like them. Wide tires are not good in snow. Instead of cutting through the snow, they just plowed all over over it in uncontrolled manner. I'm back to skinnier winter tires but I do miss the looks of the 20s during winters.

And I would think taller sidewall will be better for mud tires...

So... Spent some time on the Tire Rack website browsing through winter tires sizes.
Stock tire size for the 4.4 Sport 19's are... 255-50-19 Fronts 285-45-19 Rears The only thing I could find in matching sets that were close where these... Blizzak DM- V1 255-55-19 $169 ea 275-45-19 $207 Ea Or Pirelli Winter Carving Edge 255-50-19 $254 ea 275-45-19 $242 ea I've had Blizzaks before in various models and sizes and have always been happy with them. Not not totally sure about that rear size that's available in both brands. I'm guessing it will be okay. Wish I could find a 275 with a 50 series, but there isn't any. |
Looks like the biggest problem in your case is the staggered tire size. If you had a square 19" set-up...you'd probably have a few more tire & tire brand choices.
Thank goodness my X came with 18" wheels which made it real easy for me to find a dedicated winter tire set-up (I went with the Michelin Latitude X-Ice xi2)...and I thought they were great the first winter I used them on the X (2012/2013)...but this past winter (2013/2014) was utterly brutal and those babies were awesome in snow/ice/sleet/rain/bitter cold...and even when temps got up into the mid 60s. I believe (if memory serves me correct) the Blizzak DM V1 tire is a studless snow/ice tire...so that tire will probably work really well for your part of the country. |
I run 275/40 snows all around on the 20" style 87, the rears are a bit stretched and for sure narrower would be way better but they do OK. Honestly my e36 my with snows was way more fun in the winter but apples to oranges I guess.

Yeah, I just love the look of the Style 63's so I don't want to give them up. The wife had Blizzaks on the mini cooper and they were great, and I've had him on many different e34's. |
Anyone just put the same size all the way around?
(255-50-19's?) Stock tire size for the 4.4 Sport 19's are... 255-50-19 Fronts 285-45-19 Rears I have a 2006 with the same setup, in CA, so I'd like to put all-seasons on it to be legal for the mountains in the winter. Not much snow to worry about, so don't see the need for "real" snow tires. |
