How to check oil on Automatic ZF transmission?
Would like to ckeck the oil level on my 4.4i ZF transmission, do I have to put the car on the lift so that I can check it? Where to check? Thanks.

I think you have enough room but having ramps in front and jacks in rear gives you more room. Let it warm up to 40 C and open fill plug while running. You can check either in park or in neutral (if in neutral, apply parking brakes). Add fluid until it starts to flow out. Put the fill plug back in. Don't let it run to long (hot) or you will get inaccurate measurement since the fluid will expand. I use laser temp gauge and point it on the side of trans to get temperature readings.

Thanks for your reply. Can I use any regular transmission oil or do I need to have a specific oil for this gearbox?

I would stick with OE or OEM fluid. Looks like you have 2000-2003 4.4i model? If so, Esso LT 71141 or ZF Lifeguard 5 or genuine BMW. If you have 2004-2006 with 6-speed, ZF Lifeguard 6 or genuine BMW.

Just curious to why you want to check fluid level? Is your trans slipping?

Because of this:
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...rse-again.html I know it probably wont do anything, but still I will check if there is a need to add more fluid and have the problem solved althought I donīt have great expectations! |

Yes itīs a 4.4i 2000 model. I will check tomorrow and keep you all updated. |
If your reverse works fine when cold but doesn't when hot then it is not due to low fluid. Low fluid will cause the transmission to slip more when cold than hot as fluid expand. Either physical damage or worn part in your transmission.

I think it's funny how ZF suggests you only use their "ZF lifeguard fluids" ... even tho they don't even make them!!
I guess I just don't like sales propaganda :( but at least they squash the discussion of " lifetime zf fluid changes " |
