for the next few days run the OBC test 6 everytime you drive the car - it's free, but it will give an idea of the correct reading (you say, it is working now, right?), and then, once you catch the incorrect reading, you will see what the digital readout shows... due diligence in diagnostics will save you a lot of time (and money) in repairs...
if you care, post the pics or readouts to the thread, so we can chime in... |
Riding TX5's coat tails again...this worked recently for another X5 owner. I cant' remember if it was here, Bimfest, or Bimforums...but they ran TEST 6 while driving around until the reading went wonkers.
They were able to determine which side of the tank that was acting up...and replaced the unit on that side of the tank. If it was this forum...the thread has been in the last 3-4 weeks. |
Refueled today, added 20 + gal. the gauge says put. If I can add pictures, OBD test 6 shows right side at 0.0l after fill and a phase 2 calculation for fuel level. I will run in some techtron tomorrow and she what happens. I use Bell Performance "Mix & Go" which has done great job of cleaning everything else in the fuel system, may be too good for this sensor.

Looks like you may have a defective right level sensor based on based on the "o" integer using TEST 6 plus the PHASE 2 indication.
If the Techron treatments aren't working, the next step is to go in and do a visual exam of the right side sender and fuel level sensor (see previous illustrations in earlier posts). The components could be seized or gummed up and just require manual cleaning...or could require replacement. But we won't know until you physically go in. Below is a link to a thread started by e30cabrio back in August...he was having an issue with his fuel gauge and level sensor and ended up replacing the right fuel sender. Take a read to get an idea of how to access the sender if you're not familiar with the relative ease it would be to DIY this job to save some money. I had a similar problem with a 2006 X5. The gauge stuck right around 1/4 tank even when full. When I went to check the left side sensor I found that an industrious mouse or chipmunk had made a nest in the sensor plug well and even tried his hand (mouth?) at some rewiring. Unfortunately for me his rewiring was substandard resulting in a short.
I cut out the bad wires and soldered in new and the gauge now reads normally. |
My gauge intermittently fails to show a full tank after fill-up, usually if I drive around for 10 minutes and then shut the car off and then on again, the gauge will suddenly show the full tank.
My indy replaced the sensors/pump and the problem went away for a few months, now it is back. He now says that the problem is a defective cluster/gauge and the whole thing needs to be replaced. Any ideas? Video of how the gauge comes back to life with a simple shutdown and restart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd8D...nnel=zone5five |
