Winter tires!!!!
Hey guys. Quick question. What size tires do you guys think I should run on my x5 for winter tires. I have the stock 17's for winter use. I also want as much tire as I can possibly get on there. I believe stock size is 235-65-17. What do you guys think?

I ran that size winter wheel, (style 57s), and dedicated snow tires for several winter seasons, and they stick like a mountain goat.
Not sure a different tire size stuffed on those wheels, would be any benefit. GL, mD |
I have a full set of brand new OEM winter tires and wheels that I'm selling for around $2,000. if you were to buy them straight from the factory it would be close to $5,000.

I would stick to the original size. There are plenty of options in your size. I always use tirerack as well. This winter I am purchasing the Bridgstone Blizzak DM-V1's for mine.

Last year we had 1 day of snow here in Seattle and that lasted 6 hrs haha I had plenty of fun after 12AM with my Michelin diamari's although there was pretty much no traction. |
Last year was sad. In my area we had one half day of snow, and one full day of snow. It was fun taking the E30 out on empty street. I hear this winter is going to be a warm and wet one. We will see if that comes true.
I spend most of my winter in the mountains for snowboarding so I prefer having a dedicated snow tire. If I didn't, I would probably just run a nice all season. We simply don't get snow, but the temps do drop enough that summers year round aren't a great idea. |
I just bought a set of winter tires to run on my style 57's. I got 245/70/17 because I wanted a bit more tire height.

Bigger Winter Tires on 17s...
Fwiw, and from my fading memory, a poster named Lambeau ran 265/70-17s on his E53 a few years ago and reported no clearance problems. Those tires really filled the wheel wells. Search his posts. I thought I had a pic or link of his ride then, but couldn't find it. GL, mD PS: to reiterate, the stock size 17 Mich Artic Alpin tires I ran for several winter seasons worked like Dall sheep climbing up a mtn face. |
Thanks for all the responses gentleman. I wasn't going to go much bigger at all. Stock size is 235/65/17 and I was going to get 255/60/17 which is the same overall diameter.
