01 X5 3.0 Steering Angle Sensor Replaced, SAS Code back on
 

Common Trifecta Lights were on, went and pulled codes from a local german service center, ended up being the Steering Angle Sensor. Replaced it. Returned to the service center and they cleared the code, and calibrated it. But the code comes back on immediately before being able to do the manual reset with the steering clocked right to left.

My understand of the order of recalibrating and back to no DSC,ABS,BRAKE light was
1- turn key to position 2
2- clear the code
3- calibrate
4- turn key to off and remove
5- reinsert key and start engine
6- wheel full right and back to full left and return to center

Anyone have this occur? The only thing I've read which we may be doing wrong is not 'coding' the steering angle sensor and then 'calibrate'. The technician has been clearing the code and then recalibrating it.

If you use GT1, and after clearing all codes, the "trifecta light" how you like to call it, will stay on. Only with GT1, as I said (not with INPA). But once you start driving the car, that light will turn off by itself.

If the light stays on, after you drove a few yards / miles, you still have a problem, you should investigate.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. If you replaced the steering angle sensor...it MUST be coded to your car's specific ZCS coding in order for the new sensor to correctly communicate over the car's communication bus system.

The manual driveway "reset" along with "clearing" the fault code isn't enough. See the info below...especially near the end & last paragraph. I'm not sure if the e53's SAS is in the same location indicated in the info below which was for the e38...but the e38/e39/e46/e53 are all the same gen BMWs and use the same communication bus setup for similar engines & options:
