Catastophic Drivetrain Failure

I'm the original owner of a 2001 3.0 E53, auto trans, and for the first time ever, my car left me stranded. I was going over the Coronado Bay Bridge of all places and out of nowhere I heard a really loud screeching sound, worse with power application, and the car went from full power to absolute zero.

Park didn't even hold the car on the slope -- I had to engage the parking brake. The only thing I noticed before this happened was twice the morning of the failure, when I put the car in reverse, I felt a clunking sound once the car started moving, as though I had run over something. I even got out of the car to see what it was -- and there was nothing there.

I have absolutely no warning lights at all, and no leaks underneath the car which makes me wonder if it is a transmission problem -- usually when the tranny goes, there are warning lights and you can get home in limp mode, right?

Having my car towed to the mechanic on Monday. He says it is likely either the tranny or the transfer case. If it is the tranny, he recommends finding a good used one, but I'd like opinions on that -- the youngest of these cars is about 8 years old and I'd rather fix it right and not have to face this issue again in 30-50k miles (if the typical trans is good for 100-150k).

FWIW I have been changing the tranny fluid and the differential fluids every 30-40k, hoping this would extend the life indefinitely.....

Thanks for any thoughts on this matter.

I know that bridge.
How many miles on the tranny, did look under the vehicle to see if any thing came lose like a bolt of UV ?

Ricky Bobby 09-27-2014 12:55 PM

I bet the transfer case splines stripped the driveshaft.

zonefive 09-27-2014 03:05 PM

Ricky Bobby -- looked at other threads about that and it seems like that fits the symptoms.

I spoke to another mechanic who said that it could also be the link fork -- don't know what that is. Guess I'll look it up.

The trans is GM and original to the car. Nothing visible underneath.

X5Flyboy 09-27-2014 08:04 PM

error message???

ref "trans.failsafe.prog" for my woes' new tranny $6200 + est parts, labor, tax will put you back at least $8000.

For me it was the transfer case, so I'm getting away "cheap??" at $4400.

crystalworks 09-27-2014 08:50 PM

What happens to these when a CSB or a guibo/flex disk dies? On the 3's and 5's I'm familiar with... that can be pretty catastrophic.

Sarek 09-27-2014 11:28 PM

Splines or tcase chain

Front driveshaft splines and transfer case - no doubt in my mind at all.\

Sounds scary!!!

Update -- it was the driveshaft splines and transfer case.

Getting the car back today. $2850 including a brand-new driveshaft from BMW ($900). The shop pulled the transfer case and rebuilt it there.

The car has had a lot of work lately, and it's taken a lot of time, which is more of a hassle than the money. I handed the shop owner the list below of all the unscheduled maintenance I've done (because every time something breaks the mechanic says "Oh, we replace those all the time!") and I wanted to get an idea of what I haven't done yet -- what else is on the "breaks all the time" list -- but he says other than the transmission, I've done pretty much everything so fingers crossed!

Did your new drive shaft look any longer than the original?

Nothing quite like shared nervousness, is there RB? :yikes:

I'm going to try and compare my original to my replacement this weekend. I hope I find an extra half inch or so on the tube length.

X5Flyboy 10-02-2014 06:37 PM

just got mine back - "exch. auxillary transmssion" $2472 plus the $900 front drive shaft plus $540 labor (I did get a $300 disc from these prices)

Anyone remember Johnny Cash "One piece at a Time"?

Almost 14 yrs old and it still looks showroom new. After all my mods and upkeep (since buying it in June '05), there is no way I'm parting with mine.

Ricky Bobby 10-02-2014 06:48 PM

^^^yes srmmm, just wondering if same part went in or not. I know the longer stub is sold by A few places, usually it's welded on existing driveshaft though. Still the stub is probably 400 bucks in itself.

Ricky Bobby 10-02-2014 07:32 PM

Looks like it should almost be a 100k preventative maintenance item on the pre facelift with the NV125 transfer case.

100 bucks plus labor and a good TIG welding job plus maybe some transfer case internals. Could be all done prior to failure for less than 1200 bucks I imagine.

I am picking up the car this morning and I will ask the shop if the driveshaft I got had been changed by BMW. I wasn't aware that there had been a design change by BMW -- hopefully I have received the new "updated" part.

I believe the shop purchases directly from the dealer in El Cajon so there's no question this is a genuine BMW part.

Anyone see anything from the "breaks all the time" club that isn't on my list? (other than transmission).

Ricky Bobby 10-03-2014 09:16 AM

Nope you're pretty well covered. As long as you have fresh clips on your regulators (they were updated sometime in E53 production), have replaced the CCV once (cold weather insulated version if possible), OFHG and VCG (because of age), and the occasional door carrier, anything else is basically maintenance.

Good job on the price! Mine was $1900 on the used TC, $900 on the shaft (pun intended), and $1400 on the labor - but that included freshening up the TC with new seals and oil. I wasn't getting the VIP discount card yet back then, but sure would have appreciated that extra 15% knocked off.

I think this is an issue for early models (2001-2003) only.
The 2004-2006 transfer case-front shaft design is different.

Please correct me if I am wrong...

You're not wrong Cam. NV125 issue only for 00-03 models.

For the ATC500 facelift Xdrive transfer case your only wear issues are with the worn plastic actuator gear in the transfer case, luckily (only need to flip gear for free to fix it)

sandbagger 10-03-2014 12:59 PM

Early 04 3.0's with the 5speed auto have a longer driveshaft than 00-03's but have the same problem of very little engagement in the case.

I was able to send mine to a guy here on the board and he welded on the longer stub that he has made. much longer splines than the one in the picture on this thread. I had to split the Tcase and trans to get it to go in but did not have to replace the hub in the Tcase as it still had plenty of good splines left.

Here is the original driveshaft thread
guy does great work

zonefive 10-03-2014 05:53 PM

Got my car back, shifts smoothly and drives great. One thing I noticed is that a soft "tink" sound I used to get at low-speed shifts is gone.

The shop told me that there was a crack in the housing of my transfer case, which is something they hadn't seen before. I got the BMW part 26-20-7-508-629 which they said is not the enlongated version.

When I mentioned the idea of putting in that version, they said it was only available aftermarket and another shop had installed two, and they both broke.

It was explained to me that BMW didn't originally pack in grease where the splines intermesh and this causes failure due to rust and metal wear because there's no lubrication to prevent it. They said that unlike BMW they pack the area thoroughly with grease and so far they have never seen a failure with one of their re-manufactured transfer cases, even after many years.

So, it's nice to have the car running well again. Even after all the unscheduled maintenance cost since the car came out of warranty 9 years ago ($12,055), as long as the car remains relatively reliable for another 5 years I'll feel like I've come out ahead.
