Does the E70 4.8i suffer from these well-known N62 problems ?
Hi
I have a 2006 E53 4.4i Sport (N62 engine) that I really like. Its done around 100K miles and I still love the way it drives .. and looks. However it has begun to exhibit three problems that, I believe, are pretty common for this car and this engine, namely - Coolant leak (I add coolant once a week now) - Bad cold start behavior (its fine in summer .. intermediate levers ?) - Oil smoke from exhaust after idling (not bad now, but getting worse) Sometimes I'm tempted to flip it to an E70 with the 4.8i engine but I'm not really sure whether BMW did anything in that model, to address these problems. Does anyone know if the E70's 4.8 engine is any better with regard to these 3 problems ? Dave |
So, a quick search through the E70 forum reveals the answer to one of my questions.
Looks like E70 4.8's do have the coolant pipe problem. Amazing that BMW didn't do anything to rectify this .. oh well. Still checking on the other two |
You answered your own question. I don't want this to be which engine is better thread but I personally would never consider N series V8 engine.
While they're superior in many aspects to M62 engine, I'm simply scared of the well known issues that they all get affected with. Not to say that M62 is bulletproof but the TC guides failure (I've replaced them on my 540) is about the scariest issue and if caught on time not terribly difficult or expensive as long you're decent DIY. On the other hand, it's almost embarrassing for BMW too produce the engine that has issues that Kia Rio doesn't have. |

OP, idle causing smoke from your exhaust is one of two things... part of the oil breather system or the valve stem seals (from what I gathered). I lucked out on mine and it turned out to just be a torn diaphragm on the passenger side valve cover. Less than $15 fix and less than 20 minutes. Have a look at yours and maybe you will luck out as well. LOL now if only the N62 didn't leak a quart of oil every 3 weeks from the upper timing cover and valve covers... ;) Have the parts here, but haven't brought myself to do it just yet. |

It's not my opinion but the well known fact that new generation BMW N series engines are brilliant when it comes to fuel economy, power, torque band etc... At the same time they're definitely not designed to last as long as M series engines period and they have issues that simply shouldn't be happening to high end manufacturer such as BMW. Flame me, throw me out of here, I don't care. It's the truth. |
