GOOD VIBRATIONS..
Sometime ago I posted about an annoying vibration in the front end of my x.
It turns out after all that diagnosis and new parts (engine mounts, transmission mounts, vacuum leak test, complete tuneup, etc.) it was the front drive shafts. I replaced both l&r with GKLodro, the company that manufactures BMW. About 500 for the set. BMW cost 1400 a pair. X drivers great, but there is still a minor vibe, very slight. I was told the specs for BMW drive shafts are so precise that if you use aftermarket you will not have the OEM fit. Thus a continued minor vibe. Is this true? BTW, also replaced lower control arms and thrust bushings. |
I just replaced an axle and I have zero vibrations.

I also put GKN Lobro front axles on with no vibration. I think they are the OEM supplier.
Did you get them from a reputable place? Any chance they were switched with cheapies? |
Is there an option to rebuild the original axles in the vehicle? I'd pay for that so I can leave the inner cup in the transmission lol.
You could try a simple tire rotation (front tires to the rear) to see if that improves anything. When I balance my wheels, I make sure the wheels with the most weights go on the rear (heaviest on the RR) and the fronts get the wheels with the least amount of weights (lightest on LF). I notice a difference when I rotate tires. |
It was BavAuto supply. The box was GK. The vibe is only at idle, stopped, in drive. Disappears during drive. However, the diagnosis for axles came after the vibe began to shudder the front end during drive. Handles great. I probably need to tires soon. Keep them rotated, aligned and balanced; drove this from FL to VT, ME, CT and back to FL; avg.21 mpg at around 2900 rpm. Very comfortable clean ride. Mechanic friends says it may just be age of X. It is an 01 / 191K miles on it.

If you are getting the vibration while not moving, you can eliminate all the rotating parts of the driveline & suspension. If that is the case, you are back to looking at engine / transmission / etc.
