Repair List Nightmare
 

So I took my 01 bmw x5 4.4i to get it inspected all around engine, suspension etc.. the list they give me was huge in my opinion, on what needs to be repaired. Im hoping someone here might have an idea on what I can repair myself and what I can't. How much it would cost me in parts alone and such. Considering the fact that they said the estimate would be upwards of 10k. Heres the list:
1. Both valve cover and upper timing cover gaskets leaking
2. Recommended tune-up, spark plugs and filters.
3.Valley pan and thermostat are leaking
4.Power steering reservoir, suction line, return lines,high pressure lines and pump are leaking
5.Water pump is leaking
6.Transmission oil cooler leaking coolant
7.Both drive belts are cracking
8.Left outer tie rod has play
9.Front crankshaft seal is leaking
10.Right cv inner and outer boots are leaking
11.Rear subframe mounts have collapsed
12.Recommended wheel alignment
13.Front control arm bushings have play and cracking
Quite the list huh :(:dunno:

All pretty standard maintenance items - how long have you had the car? And how long do you plan to keep it?

If you don't really care for it or plan to keep it long term, you could keep driving it and topping up fluids and it would keep on trucking just fine. Just leave a mess on your driveway.


No drastic safety items in there. I would pay attention to the water pump and the transmission cooler lines as keeping your engine and trans at the correct operating temp is pretty vital. If it's just a small leak just keep on top of the fluid levels, but know that one day the seal might give way or lines might blow off and dump your coolant. You would want to catch it quick or deal with a major component failure.

Other than that, keep in mind it's in the mechanics interest to pick the eyes out of it. A second opinion with an explanation that you want to only fix what is urgent, before you go ahead with any work.

Have had the car for a few months now and I would like to keep it for atleast another year or 2 and I would like to fix the problems without braking the bank if possible??? I could just too it off but I'd rather repair them and not worry about them. I would like to repair atleast half the least

sounds like mine when I bought it! all 4 front arms, all 4 sub frame bushes, rear integral links and rose bushes full service and new oil breather later and she's running sweet. you'll need to get the vehicle 4 wheel aligned and tracked after having the arms done too. I bought the subframe bush tool and bushes and done all the other work myself as I work in a fiat dealer anyhow so had use of a ramp. pretty straight forward except the rose bushes as I needed a tool for that but made one in the end

Get some spray degreaser and clean your engine compartment. I doubt everything they said were leaking are leak sources, some may be just over spill.

Above advice is pretty much spot on. First check the trans cooler isnt leaking coolant into the trans. It will kill the trans. I had the opposite happen (trans oil leak into the cooling system), and got mayo sludge in the coolant. Lucky I caught it early.

Do check the coolant leaks because these can get bad and dump coolant. Oil leaks by comparison are minor inconveniences.

I've put rough parts cost if you are willing to DIY. Also I've group them and re-order in priority.

Group1
6. Transmission oil cooler leaking coolant -> not sure how much to fix without knowing leak point.

Group2
3. Valley pan and thermostat are leaking -> $500
5. Water pump is leaking -> $120
1. Both valve cover and upper timing cover gaskets leaking -> $50
2. Recommended tune-up, spark plugs and filters. -> $80
7. Both drive belts are cracking -> $30
9. Front crankshaft seal is leaking -> $25, cheap part but difficult part to replace. You may just live with it.

Group3
4. Power steering reservoir, suction line, return lines,high pressure lines and pump are leaking -> $600 if you are replacing the pump

Group4
10. Right cv inner and outer boots are leaking -> $60
13. Front control arm bushings have play and cracking -> $350 as well do control arm and torque arm together.
8. Left outer tie rod has play -> $150 if you do both sides
11. Rear subframe mounts have collapsed -> $200 there are 4 total
12. Recommended wheel alignment -> $100

If you can DIY, $3000 should cover all cost replacing above parts.

skip the wd40 prces then also and look for leaks

Wow awesome thanks for all the input, and for the pricing, and I'm pretty sure I can figure out all this stuff on YouTube or here with all the diy's

The trans oil cooler leaking coolant out on the ground can be either -

1) trans cooler body itself is leaking
2) junction between the trans cooler and radiator mounting plate

If the trans cooler itself is leaking, you'll probably have to replace it, about $150.

If it's at the junction, it could be as simple as the 2 x-rings that list at about $1.50 each.

Either repair is an easy reach from the bottom of the truck.

Clean the area up so you can pinpoint where the problem really is.

Alright thanks for all the input guys I'm going to get my garage cleaned up and take this baby apart well atleast try to and just take everything out of my way to get into the engine bay and repair what needs to done amongst other things whilst I'm in there. The x is gonna retire for a few months until spring to get it in good shape and so i can take my time :thumbup:
