The "Someone's Following You" alert?

Joshdub 12-01-2014 05:17 PM

The X5 might be having an out of car experience.

Here’s some information from Bimmerforums (E39) that shows it to be the Active Cruise Control (ACC) light. Supposedly an option not available in the US at the time.

This pic was from a 2006 e53 4.8is cluster, Canadian version. It must have a sensor for the distance. Is this system retrofitable?
Where would the RDC light go?

SMOKEY53 12-01-2014 06:32 PM

it's the 'overtake everyone' permission light

Your 2006 e53 has RDC as the tire monitor system?? And with any type of retrofit...it will take time and money to gather all the correct parts etc (mostly from Europe). You can find many of the part nbrs if you pull up the Euro side of the part database (realoem or bmwfans.info).

As you can see in the image, not only does the "following cars" illuminate...there's an extra icon for the green cruise control...as well as special icons that appear in the instrument cluster display. You will definitely need the ACC sensor which is mounted in the front bumper...and different cruise control buttons that allow you to activate the system...as well as the fuses etc...and possible ZCS coding since the ABS system will also be involved.

(ACC sensor in front bumper of a Euro e38)

Again, your 2006 doesn't have the Flat Tire Monitoring system that uses illuminates the button down below the IHKA?

http://bimmerboard.com/members/q/ori...e%20System.jpg

From 4/04 build date...the Flat Tire Monitoring sytem uses the yellow tell-tale light that illuminates in the button below the IHKA:

This is not mine but it caught my attention. The vin of that X5 is LE84292 but I cannot figure out the what option would that be... unless I overlooked it.
Mine was manufactured in 07/04.2004 and it has the tire button and also the flat tire light in the same spot on the cluster.

fmugur 12-02-2014 02:44 PM

I don't have plans to retrofit it but just curious since this is a NA car.
Here are its options. Which one is it?

Are you asking if the ACC option is listed? It's not...the option code for adaptive cruise control is S541A. There's obviously an issue with the cluster since the light is illuminated...and lots of BMWs have that same icon regardless if the option was offered in that BMW market. Most high instrument clusters have that icon.

Again, if the vehicle actually had ACC (adaptive cruise control)...not only would the icon be illuminated that you have circled in the pic below...but the green icon (for ACC would also be illuminated...as well as the little car icons in the Check Control display...which you set to determine the distance you want to follow:

(the illuminated icon is apparently an anomoly on this cluster)http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/v...psff4cf5f0.jpg

(if you have ACC...when it's activated...you will see all 3 areas illuminated like in this image below...and the green CC icon has 2 symbols instead of just the one on BMWs with regular CC)

Thanks Qsilver. It makes sense. Most likely it was just on the cluster and never hooked up for ACC.

No problem...and if you've never seen how ACC works on our generation BMWs...here's a link to a Euro E38 with ACC...the video is by Edwin (from the Netherlands...and friend to many e38 owners here in the States).

The video shows how the icons work and how you use the MFL buttons to set things up etc: http://youtu.be/vO5AdLOXeWs
