Coming up on 200K miles

I bought the family truckster in Dec 2001 & soon will be 200k miles. Been through the usual assortment of typical fails and replaced plenty a- expensive parts along the way. It's gotten to the point that their leaks rattles and creeks in all sorts of places, I'm even afraid to wash the thing lest I should see the window trim come off. :stickpoke

I'm sorry to say that although the engine and trany are still strong, to fix all the ailments of the old cow would cost a fortune.... Maybe it's time to let 'er go

Any thoughts?:dunno:

Did you buy it new? Do you have records or any idea how much you spent on it the last 13 years? Is it not reliable anymore?

200k isn't a bad run at all. I wouldn't feel too bad about passing it along at that point. Nobody likes a new car payment though!

Might as well drive it until it breaks :D

I'm at 190,000 and no excessive rattles, creeks, or leaks. The fuel pump and front wheel bearing were the two most major repairs since I've owned it at 130,000. Replacing the oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket, rebuilding DISA, replacing control arms and ball joints were all DIYable.

I am stuck at 180. Some kind of differential problem.

If I have to give up on this one, I'd just get a lower mileage one. I already know how to fix these. Then again, maybe I can turn it into a ranch truck. Maybe repurpose. I have a 5 speed and it pains me to think about getting an auto. Terrifying.

Dealers still try to get 5-6k for 180 plus though, so maybe get a couple grand and move back a few years worth of mileage and headache.

That can also be a problem... It might not break (anything major) for a long time and the OP is faced with many small annoying problems. Sometimes, it's better to get something younger or newer. However, that doesn't always hold true with reliability... ;)

Tell me about it, drove a CPO '11 F25 X3 for the wife the other day and it friggin moaned and groaned so bad with 30k miles I was laughing to myself and the saleswoman because she said it was in "amazing shape" and I went out and showed her my 11 year old E53 which is tighter and more solid.

Not yet. The Rav is so reliable for her, its only got 52k, and we just put tires on it, it is so cheap to own/maintain, and besides the fact that I have to correct the paint in spring (black and was in bodyshop due to an accident earlier this year, ugh), its a dead awesome car for her, she bought it before we were engaged. It was an idea but it would stretch the budget too much to get her a newer car now, optioned the way I wanted it was putting the price of a CPO way too high (used market is ridiculously high still, and the new car incentives are there but I don't want to take another depreciation hit). In a few years I'll either get her a CPO F25 LCI M-sport if she wants to replace the Rav4, or a final model year E70 LCI Diesel.

She's also been kicking around the idea of a "fun car", I would say an E92 M3 Convertible (hard top only), but 2 issues - I would never buy an ///M car without 3 pedals and currently she can't drive stick, and 2, I only have a 2 car garage so I'd have to build it into 3.
