Transmission slip on acceleration
 

Hi all,
I have read about a few transmission problems within this forum, but I can't find any who have the combined symptoms of mine.
My 05' 3.0D E53 automatic has recently been showing some strange behaviour which seems to come from the gearbox / transmission system.
When I pull away from stand-still, there seems to be a light slippage and judder from the transmission and sometimes the car revs up before jolting into gear and pulling away, which catches you out when pulling out at busy junctions etc! I have also had it randomly shift down on me a couple of times while driving and rev up before changing up again, under constant power and conditions.
I know there are a variety of problems for this car including the ATF, bearings, oil rings and transfer cases and some to do with the electrical system. My question is; where should I start with dealing with this issue before spending £100's on replacing unnecessary parts? Are there any things that might help narrow down what exactly is at fault, or anyone who has a good idea what it might be? No errors or warnings have come up in the car.
The car runs great otherwise but if anyone’s got any advice, that would be great!

Hi - is this happening when the X is cold ? I had similar problem with mine transmission jerk 1st to 2nd gear but at cold start only.

In my case, i have prety much resolved that issue following flush oil transmission (very hot topic and a lot of debate regarding wether or not) but for me, after 2 years it was the good decision ... I went to a tranny shop expert.

Check the tranny fluid level first. It needs to be at normal operating temp when topping it off.
Like Whitecat mentions, if it happens most in cold temps, try running it in sport mode to get the fluid temp up quicker. You'll want to try and avoid letting the tranny "slam" when accelerating from a quick stop.
Another option is make sure you have the latest software update for your year model.

Side the problem started above, I've been getting by through resetting the transmission as the post above. It is progressively getting worse however, with jolty changes to 1st and 2nd and random changing up/down when braking / accelerating sending the revs all over the place!

Going to book it in this week to get looked at, problem is it's not the best time for me financially to start looking at swapping parts around so want to have an idea on what to ask for before I pop in.

I notice a few of you mentioned flushing the tranny fluid but I have also read a similar problem being caused by a faulty harness in my model. :dunno:

Do you guys know what would be the sensible thing to look at first before I get ripped apart by a garage for needless work?

Get a good independent shop that has the proper tools to scan it and test the tranny. Then find a shop (and there should be enough) that have rebuilt many of these tranny's and go from there. Could be a number of things from as simple as fluid flush, filter and seals to valves and clutches, etc. You won't know unless you find someone with the proper tools.

- as LVP mentionned, speak with tranny specialist, tranny is a quit complexe pieces of the vehicule unless you are mechanical engineer i will not reco any DIY with that...
